Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls Preview

I’ve been gaming for a very long time. I consider myself fairly well-versed in the history of my chosen hobby and the franchises that have populated my memory over the past 25-30 years. That being said I’ve never heard of the Wizardry series despite its roots going back to 1981 on the Apple II and Commodore 64. This should be right in my wheel house but somehow it’s just slipped by me over all this time. Back in June of this year a new entry in the series was released on PSN and that same title, Wizardry: Labyrinth of Souls, is making its way to iOS next week.

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls hits iOS November 3rd

I’ve been gaming for a very long time. I consider myself fairly well-versed in the history of my chosen hobby and the franchises that have populated my memory over the past 25-30 years. That being said I’ve never heard of the Wizardry series despite its roots going back to 1981 on the Apple II and Commodore 64. This should be right in my wheel house but somehow it’s just slipped by me over all this time. Back in June of this year a new entry in the series was released on PSN and that same title, Wizardry: Labyrinth of Souls, is making its way to iOS next week.

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Souls is a first-person, turn-based, dungeon crawler RPG that plays exactly as it sounds. It feels like you’re playing a perfect mixture of a JRPG and an old-school FPS game. You’ll build your party out of ten adventurers as you work your way through two massive dungeons. Don’t expect to find any modern conventions here, this game’s heart is deeply devoted to keeping true to the roots of this 30 year-old franchise.

The game will be free-to-download from the App Store, but folks who want to take their characters beyond level five or past the first floor of the dungeon will have to pony up $9.99 via an in-app purchase.

Those who lack a penchant for challenge or love the comforts of today’s design principles need not apply. Wizardry: Labyrinth of Souls is about as hardcore as games get. If you’re looking for a challenge and have a hankering for the good ‘ol days, you should be anxiously awaiting this November 3rd release.
