The Smurfs head to Facebook in The Smurfs & Co

With a hit movie and top grossing iPhone game, it should be no surprise that the smurf phenomenon is now coming to Facebook as well. Ubisoft’s The Smurfs & Co is a city builder much like its mobile counterpart, with equal amounts of nostalgic charm.

It seems that Gargamel, that relentless villain from the smurfs universe, has discovered the secret location of the smurfs’ village. So, in order to help make him forget and thus ensure the safety of smurfs everywhere, you’ll need to create a magical potion. But in order to get the ingredients you’ll first need to build a town and harvest everything from weeds and flowers to rocks and thorns.

The game actually plays a lot like Gnome Town or Ravenwood Fair. Before you can build anything you’ll first need to clear some space, so much of your time will be spent cutting down brush so that you can build homes. As your town grows, famous smurfs will join the population. Sometimes you’ll even be able to have brief chats with other smurfs. There are, of course, quests to complete and there appears to be a relatively large map to expand out on to.

Though it’s built as a tie-in to the new live action/CG film, The Smurfs & Co actually sports a similar, 80s cartoon style to that of Smurfs’ Village, which means that it looks a lot like you’re playing an old cartoon. But that’s not a bad thing.

Aside from the smurfy theme, though, it doesn’t look like The Smurfs & Co offers too much new for fans of city builders on Facebook, at least early on. The gameplay and quests aren’t particularly original and, as a brand new release, the game is currently plagued with connection problems. You may want to wait a while before heading into The Smurfs & Co lest you be constantly bombarded with these:

If you do play, though, be sure to “like” The Smurfs film on Facebook to get an exclusive in-game movie theater for your budding smurf town.
