Street Fighter IV: Volt Preview

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. It’s more than just a Bowie song. If you’re a fan of the Street Fighter franchise, changes are simply a way of life. With six different versions of the original classic Street Fighter II released in the arcades alone, little tweaks and re-releases have come to define the series. That’s why it’s not much of a surprise that Capcom has decided to re-invent the wheel once again with the announcement of Street Fighter IV: Volt for the iPhone.

Street Fighter IV: Volt will kick your butt all over the App Store next month

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. It’s more than just a Bowie song. If you’re a fan of the Street Fighter franchise, changes are simply a way of life. With six different versions of the original classic Street Fighter II released in the arcades alone, little tweaks and re-releases have come to define the series. That’s why it’s not much of a surprise that Capcom has decided to re-invent the wheel once again with the announcement of Street Fighter IV: Volt for the iPhone.

Building on the foundations of their earlier Street Fighter IV release on the iPhone, Street Fighter IV: Volt will introduce online play over WiFi, new characters, and gameplay that has been “perfected” for the iPhone according to Capcom.

Of the four new characters, only three have been revealed. Balrog, Vega, and Cody will be joining the fight, as well as a mystery character that will bring the grand total of fighters to 18.

The first Street Fighter IV on the iPhone worked remarkably well given the lack of real buttons and a joystick, though in the end it was no substitute for the real thing. Volt looks to be just as much fun, but with a few slight improvements that should help it to stand out when compared to its predecessor. It would have been nice to see these new twists available in the original release as a mix of content updates and in-app purchases, but I suppose that just wouldn’t be the Street Fighter way.
