Star Wars: The Old Republic now free to play

The writing has been on the wall for a while now, but Star Wars: The Old Republic has officially gone free — or at least a significant chunk of it has. Players will be able to level up to 50 and make their way through the main story free of charge, but other aspects require either paying a monthly subscription or purchasing “Cartel Coins” to spend in the game.

The gated components include PvP, additional item storage, Operations (essentially raids), and more. The list of what’s barred or affected is pretty extensive, and can be read right here. Still, a free game is a free game!

Does anyone plan on giving the game a go now that there’s no monthly subscription? The influx of new users could have a hugely positive effect on the experience, though it’s possible the opposite will happen. Only time will tell.
