Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 being remastered for iOS and Android

It seems like everyone’s favorite speedy blue hedgehog has been zooming all over the mobile scene this last year, with the well-received Sonic Dash releasing earlier this month, and Sonic Jump releasing a little while before that. And now this week at GDC, SEGA has announced that the original Sonic the Hedgehog is being remastered and headed to iOS and Android platforms this spring.

Now hold up a second: hasn’t Sonic the Hedgehog been out on the App Store for a while already? Well yes, that might be true, but I think most Sonic enthusiasts are in agreement that the mobile port of the original classic was a little less than stellar. Christian “Taxman” Whitehead, the Sonic fan responsible for the 2011 remastering of Sonic CD, has confirmed that he will be performing the remastering duties once again to get everyone speeding through the Green Hill Zone this spring without a hitch.

So what’s new in the upcoming remastered version? SEGA is already reporting that the re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog will feature widescreen support, 60fps, a remastered soundtrack, and a newly added “Time Attack” mode. But the best part is that if you’ve already purchased the clunky version of Sonic the Hedgehog, you’ll receive the Whitehead remastered version in a free update!

While SEGA has only officially confirmed the remastering of Sonic the Hedgehog, Android Police is reporting (and Whitehead has confirmed) that a similar remastering treatment is also in the works for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and that each game will cost $2.99 on both iOS and Android platforms upon their release.
