When it was announced earlier this year at E3, we were kind of scratching our heads about Just Dance Now. Today the game launched worldwide on the App Store and Google Play, and after playing it, we finally get it – and I’m glad we do.

The game is a mix of crazy/bold/brilliant that captures what fans of the Just Dance series already love and recreates it wonderfully for mobile devices. How? By pairing it with your desktop browser.

Player will hold their smartphones in their right hand while watching the dancer on the monitor, recreating their dance steps as best they can. Your phone essentially replaces the Wiimote (if you’re familiar with the Wii/Wii U versions), which will supposedly track your movements to let you know how well you tripped the light fantastic.

I have to say “supposedly,” because I received a big fat ZERO on all three songs I played. Either the scoring is harsh, broken, or I’ve been living in some crazy virtual reality like The Matrix, so it’s not tracking any movements because I’m technically not making any.

Whatever the truth, scoring just isn’t working for me. If it’s working for you, please let us know in the comments below.

Regardless of scoring, though, this is a damned fun time. The game offers 49 different songs, and you can dance to five of them for free (and it looks like that selection might change every day). You can unlock everything the game has to offer with the purchase of a VIP subscription, with prices ranging from $1.99 for a day to $54.99 for the year.

If you look at it like a rental program, it’s really not that bad. Enjoy free songs regularly, and spend $2 every once in awhile if you want more.

While I wish the scoring was working, I’m not going to let it get me down. This seems like a great way to squeeze in five or ten minutes of fitness while I’m tied to my desk each day. You should probably do the same.

You can download Just Dance Now for free on the App Store and Google Play.
