Julius Styles: The International Preview

Wesley Snipes career has been on something of a downward trajectory for the last 10 years or so. Sure he had a good run with movies like Passenger 57, White Men Can’t Jump, and Blade – but with the exception of his role as vampire hunter, when was the last time you’ve even heard his name? Oh, that’s right – when he went to jail last fall for tax evasion. Still, even prison can’t keep a good actor down. Expect Mr. Snipes to make his dramatic return as an action hero later this summer with the release of Julius Styles: The International for iOS devices.

Wesley Snipes set to star in iOS game Julius Styles: The International later this summer

Less silver screen and more touch screen, The International will be the first chapter in an espionage game starring the likeness and voice work of the one and only Wesley Snipes.

“The concept for Julius Styles: The International is an amalgamation of the international spy, security specialist characters I’ve played in a couple of films,” said Snipes. “Except unlike previous characters I’ve played, who often have military special ops, spy backgrounds, I needed a twist for him. Thus, Julius Styles was born.”

Calling the tale one of “economic espionage,” developer Lapland Studios seems to be painting a picture of a game that’s less about combat and more about puzzles – a strange choice for a game developed with Wesley Snipes in mind. And the term “economic espionage” seems particularly puzzling for Snipes to get involved with, especially considering his own economic troubles.

His character Julius Styles is said to be an “economic hitman,” skilled in things like infiltrating governments and businesses, and then manipulating things to steer their decisions. That doesn’t mean we wouldn’t expect some gunplay or an assassination or two to be thrown into the mix, but thus far, the emphasis seems to be placed on adventure style elements like collecting information, combining items, and solving puzzles.

“What we have here is an incredible opportunity to take an international celebrity, whose film career is categorized by non-stop thrill rides, and turn it into an unbelievable iOS title,” said Ilkka Immonen, CEO of Lapland Studios. “Working with Wesley Snipes is an amazing experience for all of us here. We are huge fans of his movies and lending us his talents for the game makes for an unbelievably exciting time at Lapland.”

Snipes fans looking to control the actions of their favourite hero won’t have long to wait. The first episode of Julius Styles: The International will be hitting the App Store on August 11th. Here’s to hoping there’s a special “overthrown the IRS” mission in there – if only to help poor Welsey pass the time until his release in 2013.
