The Three Little Pigs is a story that, despite its moral, would have been a lot better with some kung fu. Developer SnoutUp (you might remember them from Shurican) explores this notion in their latest game, Iron Snout, available now as a free download on iOS and Android.
Iron Snout puts players in the trotters of a bi-pedal piggy by way of Bruce Lee. Our hero is beset on all sides by an army of wolves that attack from both the left and right. To defend yourself, you’ll tap on the side of the screen where you want your flurry of chops and kicks to appear, and swipe up to jump and down quickly pounce back to the ground.
It’s so simple, and on paper it almost sounds dull. So why can’t I stop playing it?
It may have something to do with the game’s cute art style. I’m a sucker for cute. Or it may have something to do with the fast and furious nature of the gameplay, and the surprises it leads to. (“My pig just grabbed a hatchet in mid-air, cut off a wolf’s head, grabbed the wolf’s head, and threw it at other wolves!!”)
Or maybe it’s just how smoothly it all comes together. The game always does exactly what you want it to when you want it to, and it just feels good.
Whatever the reason, Iron Snout has become the latest game to earn the coveted spot of “30 second distraction” on my phone, joining such past luminaries as Timberman, AwesomeBoots and Platform Panic.
