Square Enix is typically known for story-heavy JRPGs, but the mega-publisher is taking aim at the mobile space with the newly announced Guardian Cross. The company announced the existence of this new card battle game via their Facebook page, stating that the title will be released on iOS devices in the spring and will also eventually make its way to Android as well.

Unfortunately, the Facebook page is totally bereft of details save a few screenshots and the fact that the game will be free-to-play. Our assumption is that it will operate along similar lines as titles like Alien Menace and Fullmetal Battle, but really, we’re just guessing here.
Also, considering that the game will be free-to-play then you can bet that getting those really impressive, powerful cards will come at the expense of cold, hard cash. Just hope this isn’t one of those games where if you lose your opponent gets to steal one card out of your deck, because that would be tragic.
While the screens Square Enix released don’t provide much insight into the gameplay of Guardian Cross, we are getting some idea of the art style and overall aesthetic that the developers are going for. The richly detailed cards invoke a high fantasy feel, and this may be one of those experiences where looking at your deck is almost as rewarding as actually playing the game.
It’s interesting that not only is Square Enix releasing a brand new game on mobile devices and tablets, but a new genre for the company as well. Even though the company is known for its turn-based and tactical RPGs, this is the first time they’ve wandered into the realm of card battles. While they have dabbled in card games in the past (such as Triple Triad in Final Fantasy VIII), Guardian Cross marks their first full-fledged entry into the genre. Well, at least it is if you don’t count their Japan-only arcade game Lord of Vermillion, which we don’t. Either way, we’ll be keeping our eye on this one and will be sure to let you know when more details are released.
