Family Vacation – Exclusive Hands-On Preview

Meridian4 has been teasing us with screenshots and video leading up to the Oct. 25 launch of its hidden object game Family Vacation, and today we finally got some time with the game demo to tell you how it actually plays. Keep reading for our exclusive hands-on preview.

The Simmons Family is your average family of four (mom, dad, and two kids), but as the game starts they’re about to set off on an adventure, courtesy of mom Barb’s announcement that she’s earned a spot to compete on the gameshow “The Price is Nice.”

The family packs up their suitcases in preparation to travel across the country to the sunny shores of California.

Family Vacation

Family Vacation features standard hidden object scenes, where you hunt for items from a list. Each scene also contains a hotspot to find, which can be zoomed in on to find additional items (such as a computer desk, or a dresser drawer). Finally, there are also fragmented object searches where you must find pieces that make up a larger object, such as dad’s camera, son’s videogame console, or daughter’s doll.

Family Vacation

Once we had gotten the family’s suitcases packed, we played a short shape-fitting mini-game to load them into the van, snapped a picture using dad’s camera, and with the family safely on its way to the airport, our demo ended.

Family Vacation

Our first impressions of Family Vacation is that it’s a bright and easy family-friendly hidden object game that’s especially well-suited to younger players, and those who are looking for a relaxing and easy-going experience. The hidden objects aren’t too small or challenging to find, and if you do get stuck you can always rely on the recharging hint button. The one mini-game we played was straightforward, and it looks like there will be a variety of things to do as the Simmons family continues on their journey.

Family Vacation is launching Oct. 25 on Big Fish Games.

Take a trip to California in Family Vacation

Most hidden object games these days revolve around tales of murder and mystery, but Family Vacation, created by Meridian4 and Ocean Media, takes players on a fun-filled family road trip on their way to California.

Family Vacation

“We’re all big fans of hidden-object games here at Meridian4, but we were beginning to feel that we were playing the same macabre story over and over again,” said Steve Milburn, Marketing Director for Meridian4. “Family Vacation breaks that mold in every way — from the story and gameplay right down to the art style. Casual gamers will get the same accessible and addictive one-click action they crave, but in a lighter and brighter style than before.”

Family Vacation

The story follows Barb, who gets the chance to become a contestant on the game show ThePriceisNice!. Her application is accepted, and her family sets out for sunny California. It’s up to you to help them get to their destination safe and happy. You’ll have to help them pack, get to the airport on time, board the plane, have a safe flight and get to their hotel at the other end.

Family Vacation

Once at their destination, you’ll hit the beach, take in a ballgame and go to Playland Theme Park, before helping Barb compete on her favorite game show for cash and prizes.
