Scrooge McDuck wants his money back… BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY

DuckTales? A-woo-hoo! If you’re a fan of Uncle Scrooge & Co, you’re about to get a double dose of DuckTales fun. We all know that DuckTales Remastered will be launching later this month on Steam and home consoles, but did you know that Disney was hiding another game in the Money Bin all this time?

DuckTales: Scrooge’s Loot quietly snuck onto the Canadian App Store recently, and it’s just about the last thing you’d expect from the citizens of Duckburg: a team-based shooter.

Bring on the ducky death match!

DuckTales: Scrooge's Loot

We’ve had a chance to go hands-on with the Canadian pre-release, and what we’ve found is a pretty well-polished product. Players are trying to help Scrooge McDuck recover his stolen gold, which conveniently appears in piles that players can approach and collect from. Once you reach the maximum carryable amount, you’ll try to transport it safely back to your team’s helicopter. If the other team kills you (or incapacitates you — with kid-friendly weapons like bubble guns and tennis rackets, I don’t think Disney is going for the word “kill”), you’ll drop your gold for your opponent to collect. And as you’ve probably guessed, the team with the most gold wins.

The game looks good, and plays pretty smoothly too – both of which we’ve come to expect from Disney’s iOS offerings. What we don’t typically expect, though, are big, meaty action-oriented projects like this.

For a game named after someone so miserly, it’s ironic that Scrooge’s Loot is something of a gamble. On the one hand, free-to-play team-based shooters have been big hits for certain companies. On the other, none of those hits have been on iOS. Zynga tried it with Respawnables, Gameloft tried it with Blitz Brigade – and neither has managed to crack the top 200 grossing games chart. Could Disney manage to buck the trend?

DuckTales: Scrooge's Loot

If any game could, this is it. A recognizable brand, a huge related buzz, and a kid-friendly feel give DuckTales: Scrooge’s Loot more good karma than any of its competitors. I suppose we’ll find out when the game gets a proper worldwide launch at some point. There’s no word on when, but with DuckTales Remastered hitting on August 13, don’t be surprised to see this one in the App Store sooner than later.
