Critter Escape Preview

There’s something very compelling to me about universes that exist outside of just a single game. Take the Oddworld series for example. With each entry, we’re able to pull back the curtain a bit more and get closer and closer to a more comprehensive picture. Kiz Studios is taking the same approach with Planet Muck, a universe where games like SmashMuck Champions (currently in closed beta) and the upcoming Critter Escape take place.

Escaped apes are so passe. Critters are where it’s at now.

Critter Escape tells the story of a “Muck Critter” seeking refuge from the dangerous experiments going down in the Welk Industries’ Muck Science Division. Because this is a video game, it’s not as simple as waltzing on out without a care in the world. Instead, there are obstacles like traps and guards to avoid.

The action will take place across 120+ levels, all of which exist within 10 different environments. Given the plot, it would have been easy for the team to resort to the same, homogenized look for every level, so I’m glad to see that isn’t the case. Three cheers for variety!

Various challenges, bonus levels and secret (scandalous!) content will be offered alongside the campaign itself. It strikes me as an absurd amount of content to pack into a free-to-play game, but I mean that in the most positive way possible. The more the player feels like they’re being provided a full experience, the faster the freemium model can move forward. It’s also a great way to earn some goodwill with the people paying your bills, but that’s a story for another day.

Critter Escape will arrive on iOS and Android sometime in the near future – hopefully this summer. Speaking of the future, I look forward to seeing what Kiz Studios does to flesh out the universe they’ve begun crafting.
