cmplt is a paper-centric puzzle game from Philipp Stollenmayer. In practice it’s a simple matter of filling in the proper squares with color, but knowing where exactly to put them can be quite tricky. Gamezebo’s cmplt tips, cheats and strategies won’t help you learn to pronounce the title, but will help you get a handle on how to approach these increasingly abstracted brain teasers.

Paper Crafty

  • There’s no penalty for being wrong. If you place a tile in the wrong spot or accidentally remove something you didn’t want to it doesn’t matter – the only penalty in this game is not being able to access new puzzles until you complete the ones you have in front of you.
  • The color of the Menu and Hint icons always matches the color of the tiles you’ll be placing. This, or just placing one anywhere since there’s no penalty for being wrong, is a great way to figure out what you have to work with.
  • Try to see the big picture. Most of the time the puzzle involves something like a specific animal, food, or object. If you can suss out what it is before you start placing stuff, it should be easier to figure out what goes where.

  • Tile color can also help. This mostly just applies to puzzles that don’t involve abstracted concepts like roman numerals or music notes. If you’re not sure what the picture is that you need to complete the color of the tiles you get to place can help you figure it out.
  • Look for patterns. Many of the puzzles are symmetrical in nature, so if you have a clear idea of what the image is and half of it looks complete you probably need to mirror it.
  • Hints don’t go away. When you use a hint you’ll be given a few clues about where to place tiles via small red X’s on the screen. These will remain even if you place a tile on them and remove it, so take your time.

  • Hints usually don’t give the whole answer. Depending on just how many pieces are missing, you won’t actually see every missing piece when you use a hint. Still, the pieces you do know should give you a better idea of what the puzzle is.
  • You can (and probably should) stack hints. If you use a hint and still don’t know what to do, use another one. The X’s from the new hint will be added to the ones that have already been revealed and give you a more complete picture.

  • If you’re stumped and don’t want to use a hint, try a different puzzle. By bringing up the menu screen (tap the + icon) you’ll be able to switch between three active puzzles at any given time – just tap on the puzzle thumbnail you want to jump to. You’re on your own if you get stumped by all three at once, though.
