Most people assume that amphibians have long, sticky tongues so that that they can catch flying prey, but most people, as usual, are wrong. The real reason that toads have long, sticky tongues is so that they can lift themselves up into the air by popping progressively higher bubbles.

Okay, so that might not be true, but it should be. If Bubble Toad is anything to go by, the lucky bubble-licking toads would have a blast.

The aim in Bubble Toad is to lift yourself as high as you can by tapping on the screen to shoot your tongue out at a series of conveniently placed bubbles. Each time you pop one, you get a little boost in that direction.

Along with the normal bubbles are spiky bubbles that you have to avoid, bubbles with coins in them, bubbles with keys in them, bubbles that are locks, and plenty more besides.

Bubble Toad is a classic casual action game in the vein of hyper-addictive hits like Ridiculous Fishing, Bloons, and Jetpack Joyride, where it’s almost impossible to resist the lure of having just one more go.

As you get further and further through the game’s 18 distinct levels developer Honeypony Games lays on new kinds of bubbles to keep you on your toes, and you can make things more interesting still by spending the coins you earn customizing your avatar with more than 100 different bits of outfit.

High score-chasers aren’t exactly an endangered species on mobile, but we think Bubble Toad stands out thanks to its unique, gravity-defying premise, its simple but fast-paced gameplay, and its crisp cartoony graphics.
