Bridge Constructor Portal is a really interesting mashing together of two franchises. And it works really well. It’s fun, it’s challenging, and perhaps most importantly, it carries the humour of the Portal series on to mobile pretty much perfectly.

However, it’s not the easiest game to get to grips with, so we thought we’d come up with some hints and tips for you to make sure your bridges are strong and you’re going through the right portals. After all, you’re going to want to get that cake. Is the cake thing still a joke, or am I out of touch?

The Basics

  • Make it road – One of the things you’re going to keep forgetting is that you need to turn the scaffold into road if you want the test vehicle to be able to drive past it. Tap on any piece of scaffold once and it’ll turn into roadway.
  • Know your portals – After a while the portals you’re using are going to change colour. Rather than orange and blue, an entrance and an exit will be the same colour. So take a moment and see which portals go where, otherwise you might end up shot to bits by lasers. Which is bad.
  • Learn the ropes – Whenever you get a new bit of equipment, the game is going to explain how to use it. It’s really important to pay attention in these sections. There are some relationships between items that you’re going to need to get the hang of, and the game spells them out pretty damn well.

Advanced Hints

  • Always test – It’s important to test your bridges before you send a truck out on them. Tap the test button, and the game will go into play mode without sending out a vehicle. If one of your structures falls down without anything being on it, it’s time to have a rethink.
  • Ramps for the win – Quite often in the game you’re going to have to build ramps to jump on, and to land on. You need to take into account the angle that your vehicle is going to go up and down these in order to throw and catch them in the right way.
  • The convoy button – When you’ve completed a level with a single truck, you can go back and try and complete it with a convoy of trucks. Sometimes this requires you to rethink your structures. They might be strong enough for one vehicle to get across, but are they going to be strong enough for six?
Simon has been playing portable games since his Game Boy Pocket and a very worn out copy of Donkey Kong Land 2, and he has no intention of stopping anytime soon. Playing Donkey Kong Land 2 that is. And games in general we suppose.
