Any fan of a good turn-based JRPG will know all about the Brave Frontier series, but that doesn’t mean you should be put off if you haven’t heard of the game before. Brave Frontier: Last Summoner is a stand-alone spin-off set years before any previous Brave Frontier game, so if anything, this is the perfect place to start. Whether you’re new to the series or a returning regular, these top tips should have you assembling an army that will truly stand the test of time.

  • Play first, explore later. For any beginner to RPG’s or JRPG’s at first, you’ll find the menu system a bit overwhelming. You’re earning several different currencies, all of which are used to purchase different upgrades. Plus, you wouldn’t know what to do with the extra currencies and what to buy, but that’s ok. At first, you won’t have any loot or any crystals so it will be impossible to try and explain what anything does before you go out there and start earning it. So start playing, you’ll earn loot from just about anything you do!

  • Enjoy the tutorial. I know to most of you, this will sound like a contradiction. How can I enjoy something so drawn out and tedious? Well, find a way, because the tutorial really does impart everything you should know for combat.
  • Wait before attacking. To any novice, the easiest way to attack is to slide across every individual and just send them to all attack at once. This will work most of the time at the beginning of the story, as the game is trying to be nice to you. However, slowly and surely, you’ll find this is not a viable tactic, as there are always one or two enemies left at the end of your turn, and they will attack you. Before you just slide, count how many enemies there are, plus consider what level the enemy is. If you have a squad of five and there are five level one enemies then you can just swipe and it should be fine. Sometimes you should select individual enemies and attack one at a time, rather than slide and hope everyone dies.

  • There is more to do then the story. After you’ve cleared a level in story mode, it will be unlocked for Harvest and Challenge mode. In Harvest mode, you fight against stronger enemies for better rewards. You earn these better rewards by filling up a progress bar, which usually takes a few levels to fully charge. Challenge mode is quite similar to Harvest, but it’s even tougher. The enemies here are not for the faint-hearted and they do pack a hefty punch. If I were you, I would save Challenge mode for when you have significantly better loot and have completed a couple chapters in the story.

  • Don’t worry about your crystals. Crystals are dropped by every enemy in the game. They drop even before the enemy is dead, so dealing damage is good enough to gather some crystals. If you don’t think you’ll be able to kill every single enemy in one move, then I recommend using some crystals. These crystals can be used in a defensive manner, for example, rock armour or a group healing spell. Or you can use your crystals for a massive attack, to try and kill every enemy on screen in one move.
  • Learn your units. Some units are only capable of using crystals in a defensive way, and others can only be offensive. Archers allow you to spend crystals to make the enemy drop more crystals than normal, so you can use this to double your money. Although, it’s important to know and expect what kind of damage each individual can do, so you aren’t hung out to dry by weak attacks.

  • Check your loot. After a bit of time playing, you will have earned a weapon upgrade for every character you have. This means from now on you should be regularly checking your inventory for stronger weapons and other upgrades you can apply to your characters. Just remember, there is no benefit in letting a stronger weapon gather dust. Give every unit a stronger weapon, you can always take it off them later when you get a new character.
