Historians don't talk about it much, but in the long-ago times, medieval wars were primarily fought with warriors and monsters that were summoned via playing cards. That's right. Dragons, werewolves, and fish-people were called up from the abyss with cards that were used for simple games of Old Maid during the daylight hours, and the monsters would lay waste to legions of foot soldiers.
