We’ve tested a fair share of controllers here at Gamezebo, but not many specifically for the PS5. So the Phantom controller from Hexgaming is a mildly interesting change of pace.

It’s an impressive controller straight out the box. Packed up tightly in a stylish black box, it’s a premium gaming accessory and it knows it.

You have eight thumbsticks and a joystick adjustment tool, and these all feel easy to use and put together. Nothing feels cheap or tacky, no mean feat considering some of the controllers available nowadays – even premium ones.

There’s a good weight to the controller, and it feels very much like the DualSense. It arguably is a slightly slicker piece of kit than that though, with crisp face buttons and a colour scheme that really grabs the eye.

But what really sets the controller apart from your standard controller are the aforementioned swappable thumbsticks, back buttons, and digital triggers.

This allows you to have it set up exactly how you want, with a good variety between the sets to fit any finger size and playing style you might have.

Beyond this feature there are some great aspects to the Phantom that marks it out as a premium PS5 controller. There’s the chance to counter stick drift with a DRIFIX module where you can open up the Phantom yourself and fix any issues you might have – and we found it much easier to do this than we expected.

There are also well positioned back triggers on the back panel, and we generally found gaming with the Phantom a pleasure – whether we were playing faster paced titles or slower, more considered fare. There was never any discomfort for using it for extended periods of time either.

Ultimately the Phantom is undoubtedly one of the best premium PS5 controllers available, and despite the high price is well worth considering if you’re looking to upgrade to the standard DualSense controller.

Simon has been playing portable games since his Game Boy Pocket and a very worn out copy of Donkey Kong Land 2, and he has no intention of stopping anytime soon. Playing Donkey Kong Land 2 that is. And games in general we suppose.
