Gamezebo was at GDC this year, catching up with our favourite mobile games developers. You might not have heard of Cafundo Creative Studio, a super talented developer based in Brazil, but as soon as Tetragon hits the App Store you most certainly will.
Tetragon is a rotating world puzzler in which you play as a father trying to rescue his son who’s trapped inside a strange world. Basically, the world was kept alive by a special gem in the centre, which has broken into many pieces now scattered throughout the world.
In lieu of the gem, the world takes your son instead. He’s now trapped in the centre, keeping the world alive in the gem’s place and it’s up to you to try and rescue him.
That involves working your way through 42 different challenging levels across four different worlds. Each level is chock full of puzzles to solve, secrets to discover, and NPCs to meet.
You’ll start your adventure with the ability to move and jump, but as you progress you’ll start to pick up new abilities. This includes the power to move platforms to create new paths and to rotate the world.
These powers are made possible thanks to a lamp that you carry around with you. There are really nice visual effects whenever your character uses a power, as he holds the lamp aloft. In fact, the animations in general are all top notch, with real attention to detail.
That’s what struck us most about Tetragon – it has an absolutely gorgeous art style. It really feels like playing a cartoon, which is incredibly impressive.
More so than that, the puzzles are genuinely challenging. We played through a few levels and it reminded us a lot of Monument Valley. You’ll have to think a few steps ahead as you try and navigate this treacherous world.
New mechanics arrive regularly too, which keeps you on your toes. One good example of this is in the platforms you can move. Early on, you can move a single platform but quite quickly you meet twin platforms. You can’t move one of these without moving the other, which leads to some really interesting puzzles.
The making of the game is pretty interesting too. We learned that development started three years ago at a game jam. The developers were challenged to create a game that could fit inside a post-it, and Tetragon is the result.
Tetragon launches later this year for free. You’ll be able to play through the first world before you have to unlock the rest as a single IAP. You can learn more about the game on the official site.
