Deer Hunter 2014 ambles onto Facebook
By Joe Jasko
Get ready to bag a few bucks and wear out those camo pants! Popular smartphone and tablet game developer Glu Mobile has announced today that one of their biggest new releases has just been given the Facebook treatment: Deer Hunter 2014.First released for iOS and Android this past October, Deer Hunter 2014 not only proved to be one of the best entries in the Deer Hunter series, but also one of the best mobile hunting games around. It's going to be interesting to see how the game's delicate balance of swift hunting mechanics and simple controls will translate onto the Facebook medium now."In speaking on the announcement, Glu Mobile CEO Niccolo de Masi has stated, "We are excited to bring our most successful title ever to players on Facebook. Deer Hunter is the most realistic hunting game available and a fantastic experience on the Facebook platform."Deer Hunter 2014 can be played on Facebook today by clicking right over here, but if you find yourself to be more of a mobile kind of hunter, then you can still pick up the game for iOS or Android as well. Happy hunting!Disney removes controversial energy meter in new Where’s My Water? 2 update
By Joe Jasko
Up until its release this past September, Disney's Where's My Water? 2 was one of the most highly anticipated sequels in the mobile games space. But then the game was actually released, and users began to discover the heinous energy system that made the game all but unplayable without paying at regular intervals, or enduring giant wait times after only several minutes of play. Worse yet, you couldn't even pay a one-time fee to remove the energy bar entirely; only slightly extend it.So naturally, mobile gamers were not too pleased. In fact, the game even earned a measly 2.5 stars in our own official review thanks to its awful freemium model. But now it looks like Disney has finally owned up to their colossal mistake, and in a new update to Where's My Water? 2 this week, they have officially removed that controversial energy meter once and for all."The official 1.1.0 update description on both the iTunes and Google Play game pages reads: "We took your feedback to heart and REMOVED the energy system in this update! Yep that's right. Now play as often and as much as you like! For those who purchased the expanded energy meter, you will receive 2 Monster Bundles for free!" The update also adds two brand new locations into the game, called the Bayou and Winter Woods.New iOS Games Tonight: Cut the Rope 2, Colossatron: Massive World Threat and more!

Well the holidays are almost upon us now, and there's only a few short days left before Apple initiates their annual iTunes Connect Holiday Shutdown, closing their digital doors for a week so that everyone can spend some much needed time relaxing and catching up on their growing backlists of games before tons of new ones hit the scene once again. But you didn't think that some of today's biggest mobile developers would let the year end without a bang, now did you? It's true that 2013 might have very well saved the best for last, as when you've got brand new games coming from both ZeptoLab and Halfbrick on the very same day, well then you just know that someone's been a very good boy or girl this year. So let's all just kick back and enjoy the very last Wednesday night of big new iOS releases in 2013, because trust me when I say: this one is going to be a doozy!Evil Genius Online is now in open beta
By Jim Squires
Get ready to do some evil, evil do-ers! The free-to-play rethinking of Evil Genius, the well-loved strategy game from 2004, has just come out of its closed beta and is now available to all on Facebook. We've been told that the game isn't quite finished yet - this really is a "beta" beta - so player feedback will help shape what the game ultimately becomes when it's formally launched in 2014. And if you're worried about not being a Facebook gamer, don't worry - Rebellion CEO and Creative Director Jason Kingsley is quick to point out that games like Evil Genius Online should help break the stereotypes that come with the term "Facebook game.""Free-to-play and browser games aren't for just one kind of person, or one kind of game," says Kingsley. "We think Evil Genius Online's blend of strategy, black humour, and cutting-edge browser tech will resonate with a lot gamers."You can find out if he's right first hand. The open beta for Evil Genius Online is available now.Escape a Gothic gauntlet in Running Shadow’s debut trailer
By Joe Jasko
We've been salivating for more information ever since Game Insight first announced their fierce new endless runner with a dark overtone this past September. The biggest draw of Running Shadow is that the game aims to take that recognizable endless runner gameplay and infuse it together with core role playing elements: all set against the dismal, yet beautiful backdrop of a Gothic-themed world. So basically, it's pretty much the closest we'll ever get right now to playing a Castlevania endless runner. But that was back when we only had a few measly screenshots to look at. Now a long-awaited gameplay trailer has finally entered the fold…Actually seeing the game in action for the first time, everything about The Running Shadow's mysterious and, well, shadowy lore immediately makes perfect sense. You'll be speeding your way through foreboding castle interiors and dodging all sorts of deadly gauntlet traps like rows of spikes or fire columns. You'll be encountering the fiercest of foes, from dastardly mages to ax-wielding knights. And of course, you'll be running along a crumbling stone bridge with some ominous talons gripping at the edge.So needless to say, we're more than a little stoked to make our way through The Running Shadow's gorgeously stylized world. The game is currently slated to launch on iOS and Android platforms sometime in early 2014, and in the meantime you can check out the game's newly launched website for some more Gothic fun!The Best Games of 2013: #20-#16
By Jim Squires
We kicked off our best of the year coverage a little early with our special +13 Edition yesterday, but if you're looking for the real meat and potatoes of this countdown, it begins here.We reviewed nearly a thousand games in 2013. That's a staggering number no matter how you slice it. But of the thousand or so games we looked at, only twenty could rise to the top and be called best of the year. (well… 20+13, but you already knew that, right?)But enough jibber jabber. Let's kick things off right. Here are our picks for #20-#16.Castaway Paradise is Animal Crossing meets Harvest Moon
If there's one game type that is egregiously missing from the ever-growing trove of the App Store, it's the Animal Crossing-like life sim. Even with vaguely similar entries like Happy Street and The Sims 3 available on iOS, nothing quite scratches our itch for a colorful, cartoony world where you can spend all day fishing or decorating your den—until now. Castaway Paradise by Stolen Couch Games intends to fill that gap and then some, offering a living, breathing world that is inspired by Animal Crossing but expands upon it in ways that will keep players busy, challenged, and right at home.Castaway Paradise takes place on a collection of islands that gradually open up as the game progresses. Players will assume the role of their personally designed avatar, who washes up on shore and decides to make the most of their shipwrecked situation. While you'll start with only a small, donated tent to house your few belongings—basically the clothes and seaweed on your back—it's easy to begin making money and become a productive member of island society. Similar to Animal Crossing, fishing and bug-catching are lucrative means to expand your coffers, but the bucks don't stop there. "Animal Crossing is the obvious inspiration indeed," Eric Diepeveen, co-founder and game designer at Stolen Couch Games told Gamezebo. "We're diverging from that game by making the gameplay deeper and more task-oriented. We like Animal Crossing, but we're not huge fans per se. My personal problem with the game is the lack of tasks. That's why I designed Castaway Paradise more like a social game.Deal of the Day: Contra Evolution is FREE
By Jim Squires
Love your mobile phone, but wish it had a little more old school action? The kind you played on the Nintendo when you were eight? And better yet, do you wish it was free?If you said yes to all of the above, you're incredibly demanding. But also, your wish has been granted. To celebrate the game's latest update (which added a Boss Rush mode, ranking system, and character skill system), Contra: Evolution is available for free until Thursday. Considering the game earned a nearly perfect score in our review, this is a deal that's well worth snagging. Now grab a big gun and head down to South America, soldier - you're needed.
