    Copyright is failing Nicky Liow. The developer got his start rearranging code in open source games passed around for free online. He's a self-taught programmer that learned by doing, and did so with the help of the free spread of ideas and information.Now he's giving something back. Nothing to Hide is his upcoming puzzle game -- an "anti-stealth" game where the goal is to constantly be seen. It's a blunt statement on the nature of surveillance culture and it's completely without copyright. The art, the code and the music are entirely in the public domain, even as the game is being developed.The game's funding, too, is open to the public. Nothing to Hide is offered through Liow's own site in a way that keeps him accountable. He only takes 25% of a pledge for each milestone (once at the start, and again when the game hits alpha, beta, and final release). Anyone unhappy with the state of the game can withdraw their remaining funds at any time.I spoke with Liow to discover why he sought to create an entirely "public" game. His inspiration, it seems, comes from the same place as his skill as a programmer.

Hearthstone, however, has the luxury of being a digital card game with graphics and the like to tickle you fancy and give the old imagination a rest.Now in open beta on PC and Mac, Hearthstone makes a solid first impression.At first I was dazzled, just as I'm sure Blizzard wanted. Then I was worried. Blizzard is a crucible; taking ideas that work in other places and other spaces and boiling them down to their most essential. Card games have certainly been around for an age and a half, but digital card games -- ones designed from the ground up for screens and clicks -- are relatively new. I wondered; did the company have enough original spirit to make those essentials from whole-cloth?

    I've seen some reviewers refer to In Fear I Trust as a survival horror game. I've also seen the App Store's description describe it as "polished, compelling, and instantly unsettling."It is none of these things.The game does nothing to dispel the rumors of its horrific nature, but I can assure you that this is a visual novel at heart. Personally, I like visual novels quite a lot (Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward has one of my favorite video game stories of all time and Device 6 proved that the genre has a place on iOS)."Perhaps Chillingo and Turn Me Up Games didn't think a Western audience would be receptive to a game marketed as such, because the app's page is quick to point out the "danger" and "creepy jump scares" found in the game. Unless you count the danger of encountering one of several dozen bugs and glitches in the game's decidedly unpolished first two chapters (the game is episodic and, at the time of this review, only the first two chapters are available) you're in no threat of dying - ever.Rather, the game is presented as a series of locked rooms and the illogical puzzles needed to open them. Occasionally, you'll encounter a tape recorder or journal to fill out the story or trigger a flashback cutscene. That's pretty much the whole game, and if the puzzles weren't so poorly designed, the story so disjointed and confusingly written, and just about everything else riddled with technical issues, that would be enough.

    Video games are so hot right now. Specifically, games with digital cards that fight each other and multiplayer online battle arenas.MMOs are quite popular as well I hear (at least developers continue to think so), and turn-based strategy games like XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Fire Emblem: Awakening proved that when people say they want more games in that glorious genre, they don't actually mean more shooters.These genres can't possibly have anything in common, you say. They're all such very unique snowflakes. You'd be wrong, of course. What they have in common is war: the eternal war of the Warhammer franchise from Games Workshop, to be exact.

    If, like me, you've never played a physical dice-building game before, then Quarriors should be the right game for you. It's not very complicated. You roll your dice, gather your resources, and attack with your monsters while your enemies defend. Sometimes you buy monsters or spells and build up a whole virtual dice bag of possibilities.Unfortunately, that last paragraph is far and away a better tutorial than the one the game provides. In Quarriors, the actual tutorial is a dizzying info dump of pop-up windows and flavor terms with nary a layman's interpretation to guide you. It will teach you to collect "quiddity" to capture monsters from the "wilds" so you can accrue "glory;" just don't expect a breakdown of what any of that means, or for any of it to be eased into your game organically. If you miss the tutorial blast at the top of your first round, you can dig through a series of static PDFs in the help section for a dictionary of terms and turn orders, but that's hardly optimal. Quarriors does not make a good first impression."Lucky for the developers, then, that the game is so addictive. Once you parse the learning curve, the core mechanics are surprisingly simple - and more importantly, incredibly fun. You can get through an entire match in a few minutes if you play with other humans in the room, or against the game's AI. Online matches take longer, being asynchronous, and unfortunately share the offline mode's drought of information. It took me a few moments to even realize online play was asynchronous.
