    There are a lot of digital CCGs out there that use the "cards feeding into other cards" formula to great effect. It's an interesting system of upgrading and enhancing, but it begins to feel like a production line after a while. AtlanticaS changes things up a little bit by treating each card as an individual character, one dimensional though they might be. It doesn't exactly reinvent the genre, but it adds its own brand of charm to the mix by doing so.

    A Little War is a strange beast. It's not quite a castle defense game, although it definitely shares a few elements with the genre, and it's not quite a lane-based defense game despite similar reasons. Yet it manages to combine elements from both, and add its own flair, to great effect. It's just a shame it's so zeroed-in on the free-to-play model that it's difficult to keep playing after a while.

    I've begun to notice certain frameworks within many free-to-play games that almost function as a set of game design sub-genres. The reason I'm bringing this up is because I know I've played a game very much like Steam Age before, only it wasn't thoroughly soaked in steampunk. I like steampunk.

    A quick wit and a sound sense of strategy will be essential for anyone looking to fight their way through Fantasy Adventure's 60 levels. It's a long and rough road, but one well worth travelling for genre fans. There's just one thing that confuses me: how in the heck is this a free-to-play game?

    D.O.T. Defender of Texel is a freemium mobile game produced by Mobage, and as such it adheres to many of the publisher's typical mechanics. Questing, boss fights, PvP, elite team building, fusion and evolution, and so on all play a major role. But as similar as it may be in spirit to its brethren, the presentation - the gorgeous, fantastic, tongue-in-cheek presentation - makes it feel like something entirely unique and special.

     Pretty much every iOS gamer has thought about the possibility of playing their favorite monster-battling Nintendo game at one point or another. Unfortunately the Big N doesn't seem to share their enthusiasm. But that's okay, because now we have Haypi Monster. It's not exactly a 1:1 experience, but it's probably as close as an iOS developer has come so far. And it's free-to-play, no less!

    Most free-to-play games adhere to a fairly strict set of rules, and doing so tends to make them far less interesting than they could be. However, as with most other games of any genre, taking a familiar theme or idea and doing something even slightly out of the ordinary with it can make a huge difference. It's probably the reason I've been enjoying Knights & Dragons: Rise of the Dark Prince so much.

    Jet Trains certainly looks the part of a track-switching puzzle-esque train game. But make no mistake, there's little (if any) brain-teasing going on here. This is a racing game first and foremost. Granted, it's a fairly unorthodox racing game featuring linear tracks and steam engines, but it's a racing game nonetheless. One that can be surprisingly addictive once it gets its hooks in, which doesn't take long.
