    Well kids, it's almost Halloween and you know what that means—spooky tricks, piles of treats and the inevitable release of bad Halloween-themed video games. Every year publishers try to bank on our holiday fervor by getting us to spend money on themed entertainment. Unfortunately, the quality of these offerings in general, just isn't very good. In keeping with this disappointing trend, developer Casual Arts brings us Halloween: Trick or Treat, a textbook example of cynically conceived, carelessly made, holiday-exploiting, interactive dreck.

    It's fairly common for hidden object games to turn to history, myth and legend for their inspiration, but the range of cultural traditions they reference is often woefully narrow. The Dark Hills of Cherai: The Regal Scepter, from Indian developer Chayowo Games, forgoes the overused Victorian mansion/Celtic ruin/19th century village themes to create its own unique brand of hidden object gameplay, wrapped artfully up in the magic and lore of India.

    Fairy tales are fertile ground for games and this month, Alawar Entertainment draws its latest hidden object adventure straight from them. Oddly Enough: Pied Piper follows classic fairy tale, "The Pied Piper of Hamelin," telling the story of a village plagued by rats that hires (and then swindles) a skilled musician to lure the rats away. While the tale's a natural fit for this kind of adventure, the game suffers from an ill-thought-out ending.

    These days reality shows pervade our lives so perhaps it was inevitable a video game would be made about them. Elephant Games' new hidden object adventure Urban Legends: The Maze takes us behind the scenes of a hit reality show after it's abruptly cut off and its contestants inexplicably vanish. It's a unique concept for an H.O.G. that fortunately for us, is far more entertaining than most reality shows ever are.

    The Bermuda Triangle has long engendered fearful fascination among those acquainted with its mythical powers and this makes it the perfect setting for an uncanny adventure. Set within this infamous location, Hidden Expedition: The Uncharted Islands revisits many of the locations, themes and characters of Hidden Expedition: Devil's Triangle and expertly expands upon them to create a compelling (though at times baffling) hidden object game.

With the Pirates of the Caribbean films popularizing this dream, the timing couldn't be better for Written Legends: Nightmare at Sea. This piratey new adventure offers a boatload of fun and speaks directly to the wannabe swashbuckler in all of us.

    Blue Tea Games just keeps getting better and better. The developer responsible for the amazing Dark Parables and Enlightenus series has once again hit a home run with its newest franchise, Macabre Mysteries. The first title in the series, Curse of the Nightingale, takes what Blue Tea does well—gorgeous graphics and an intriguing storyline—and manages to crank them up to yet another level; the result is one unforgettable hidden object adventure.

    In the over-crowded world of the hidden object game, there are hidden object games (meh) and then there are Hidden Object Games (wahoo!). Though on the surface, games in the genre might seem easy to make—just toss a load of random things together so people can sort through them—the difference between a great hidden object game and a so-so one comes down to clever design, skillful story construction and loving attention to detail. Lucky for us, the people at Vogat Games are experts at making the former variety and F.A.C.E.S. is a stellar example.
