    A lot of justifiable complaints are leveled against modern games' obsession with tutorials. Those of us that grew up plugging a cartridge into an NES and then praying for clarity tend to get impatient with hand-holding and long-winded instructions. While brevity is certainly preferable with tutorials, we still need to learn how to maneuver around a title (especially since today's games don't come with printed manuals—remember those?). If we misunderstand a game's mechanics, we might become irritated and put that game down forever.Fright Heights is a rare example of a game in need of a fleshed-out tutorial. It's an initially befuddling puzzle title that provides some cute and creative brain-bending once you get the hang of it - but the learning process is totally on you. Frustration, not ghosts, is what might wind up driving you away from these haunted halls. Look up online tutorials if necessary, and persevere. It's worth it.Fright Heights takes place across several run-down towers that are populated by various ghouls and ghosties. Humans have begun snooping around the area, because our species lacks the survival instinct that helps smarter animals pay attention to big fat "KEEP OUT!!!" signs. It is your duty to set up ghosts and scare away the warm-bloods.Fright Heights is a little bit Sudoku and a little bit Tetris. The right side of the screen is occupied by the multi-level tower, which is essentially your game board. On the left side, there's a line-up of people and ghouls. Each monster is surrounded by different numbers that indicate its scare factor. The location of the numbers technically give the monsters a shape: some have a value above and below, some have values on all side, and so on.

    Rhythm games and match-3 puzzle games are typically regarded as quiet, soothing fare - games that are good to play while you're winding down in bed with a steaming cup of chamomile tea on your nightstand. Joerg Doneit's Neurokult, however, combines elements from the puzzle and rhythm genre, and it's anything but relaxing. Seriously, you'll get a better night's sleep if you snort Red Bull in lieu of playing this title.Not to suggest that Neurokult is a bad game. Far from it. But if you let your attention wander for even a fraction of a second, you'll wind up as pixel-dust floating through the emptiness of cyberspace. It's a brutal little bugger, and for that reason you'll be compelled to try again and again.The premise for Neurokult isn't complicated, but it ultimately explains the game's neon phenotype: you're a voyager exploring the vast reaches of "neurospace," but your journey isn't an easy one. You need to bypass security measures by tapping on colored buttons while avoiding the many traps, bosses, and pitfalls that aim to blast your mind out of existence.Indeed, getting beyond the first level of Neurokult requires superhuman reflexes. Colored pieces slide across the screen at varying speeds, and you must tap them to be rid of them before they hit the right side of the screen and deplete your synaptic plasticity (er, health bar).

    It's rare to be able to point to a mobile game and say, "This title fits this platform as snugly as a wax cylinder fits a phonograph," but that's where we are with Simogo's Device 6. This interactive novel works beautifully with the touchscreen rather than in spite of it. More importantly, it delivers a remarkably unique and engaging experience that carries on Year Walk's spirit, but is considerably more polished than its predecessor.Device 6 gradually tells the story of Anna, a girl who wakes up alone in an opulent, seemingly abandoned setting. There are two things on her mind: escape, and figuring out where the heck she is. All she's carrying is a massive headache and a vague memory of a creepy doll.Device 6 is told across six chapters, which double as interactive escape situations. Reading through these chapters isn't as straightforward as beginning at "Once Upon a Time" and concluding at "The End," however. The narrative twists and turns - figuratively and literally. When Anna turns right down a corridor, the on-screen text may take a sharp right, forcing you to turn your device accordingly. If she descends down a staircase, the text does as well. It's easy to get lost in Device 6's words during these moments (again, literally), which can be frustrating - until you begin to notice that there are arrows beside the text that quietly herd you in the correct direction.

The Wolf Among Us, based on Veritgo's long-running comic series by Bill Willingham, is sharp, funny, and full of intrigue. You'll be hooked the second Mr. Toad claps his bulbous eyes on the main character and hisses, "Shit.""The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 - Faith is an episodic adventure game by Telltale, who has already demonstrated that they're really good at this sort of thing through The Walking Dead. You roam the foul streets of '80s-era New York as Bigby Wolf, a detective/policeman who's employed to help keep things peaceful amongst New York's population of Fables."Fables" are refugee characters from fairy tales who've been shoved out of The Homelands and forced to relocate in New York State. Bigby Wolf, once known as a certain "Big Bad," is primarily concerned about making sure the Fables living in New York City's Fabletown keep a low profile and a human guise. However, things take a violent turn one day, and Bigby finds himself responsible for solving the gristly murder of a certain Fable.
