    Alright boys and girls, school is in session. Today's lesson: "What is cool?" Pirates. Pirates are definitely cool. So are side-scrolling adventure games with crazy artwork. And it should be noted that giving anything a steampunk setting automatically makes it cool, too. Someone apparently had the bright idea to mix all three of these things together; the result is Steam Pirates, an iPhone RPG that is not only completely different from anything else on the system, but way cooler than most games in the App Store, too.

    It's got to be tough, putting together a quality match-three game for the iPhone. It seems that, in order to stand out from the pack, you have to put together a title that is either great or terrible… though only one of these options really has any potential for strong sales. If you create something that is, well, mediocre or just "good", the app is likely to get lost in the crowd. Unfortunately, the iPhone port of the PC game Enchanted Cavern isn't able to differentiate itself or do things well enough to be considered much better than its competition.

    Shrek Forever After has finally arrived in theatres, which means that tie-ins are appearing everywhere. Not surprisingly, one such tie-in is on the App Store for the iPod Touch and iPhone, aptly titled Shrek Forever After: The Game. This game is faced with the daunting perception that licensed properties are often underwhelming, but Gameloft seems determined to buck this trend by producing a substantial offering.

Developer Playrix has just released a port of the title for the iPhone; thankfully, this time around the port has not only been done right, but it's actually improved on pre-existing issues from the PC version.

    Virtual pets have been big business since they became popular in the 1990s, and it's more than a little surprising that we haven't seen more apps for the iPhone geared towards this market. Tactile Entertainment's latest creation, Pocket Creatures, is aimed to appeal to anyone who likes the idea of carrying a digital pet around in their pocket, but a number of small problems keeps this app from being very enjoyable.

    When it comes to role-playing games on the iPhone, titles tend to feature production values that mimic the era of the SNES and Sega Genesis. That said, it's not surprising that Square-Enix is pushing the genre forward to the next level, given the company's history with producing critically-praised and groundbreaking RPGs. The recently-released Chaos Rings proves that not only is the iPhone capable of delivering a modern Final Fantasy-like game experience, but it can do so beautifully.

    It's not surprising that developer Flightless put out a game about herding sheep. After all, the company is housed in New Zealand, which (if I recall from a shearing demonstration I saw while visiting the country a decade ago) is the nation with a 30-to-1 ratio of sheep to people.

    When it comes to historic video games, there aren't many that are more established or loved than the classic Snake. While there are several versions of the classic arcade title available for the iPhone, the latest release,RPG Snake: The Legend of Akua, tries to do something original by making it a pseudo RPG. While it's a nice twist, this isn't nearly as original a game as it sounds like it should be.
