    I don't know a lot about badgers. I remember there was one in Wind in the Willows, and he was sort of wise and a bit grumpy, but otherwise I've had zero education on where badgers live, what they eat, and how they live their lives. I'd use Shelter as a learning aid, given that you play through the life of a badger - but the team behind it told me recently that they have no clue about badgers, and they just sort of made up the experience as they went along.

    In terms of getting me excited about a game, the phrase "A Metroidvania style action-platformer set in a magical Mexican inspired world" is always going to do the job. I do love my Metroid-style games, and enjoy exploring the twists that modern titles put on the original formula. Guacamelee is the most Metroid-like game I've played in quite some time - sure, it has its own little neat ideas packed in, but for the most part, it's heavily inspired by the Nintendo classic. That's far from a bad thing, mind you, as there's so much style and finesse lavished across this adventure.

    Spelunky is one of the most wonderful indie success stories you can find. It was previously released back in 2009 as a side project by Derek Yu, a developer who has dedicated much of the last decade of his life to the indie game scene, helping out other developers and generally being a force for good. After the original version of Spelunky proved a roaring success, Yu decided to go ahead and create a full-blown commercial edition of the game - and so we catch up to the present day, where Spelunky is ready and waiting for you to take up the challenge.

    It's fair to say that we liked last year's Mikey Shorts. It was a precision-perfect platformer that had something for everyone - speedrunners, collectors, casual players, et al. Now there's a sequel called Mikey Hooks, and while it doesn't does a whole lot new over the original game, you're not going to catch us complaining.

    There's a massive difference between how you approach games that offer style over substance, rather than vice versa. In a stylish game that doesn't offer a huge amount of depth, there can be this initial burst of excitement and adoration for just how incredible the quality of the production is, but this is often followed up by the steady realization that there ain't much going on under that gorgeous bonnet.

    There's been a fair amount of negative press around Kickstarter and the art of crowdfunding a game recently. We've seen games successfully funded via Kickstarter that have then gone on to receive massive delays; we've seen developers say "we're doing this so that we don't need a publisher!" who have then gone on to immediately use a publisher; we've seen games released with only a small portion of the features that the Kickstarter promised originally; and we've even seen a very small number cancelled outright.

    There's something ultimately calming about Euro Truck Simulator 2. Whether you're dashing along the highway, clear skies ahead of you and an open road beckoning, or maneuvering down country roads in the dead of night, rain splashing against your windscreen, the entire experience always feels pleasantly meditative, and in many ways, very different to the typical style of video game that you might expect.
