      Plants vs Zombies Review

      By Marc Saltzman

After clicking though the disappointing Bejeweled Twist late last year, we were concerned PopCap Games, one of our favorite casual game companies, had lost its mojo. Thankfully, we were dead wrong. From the folks who brought us Peggle, Insaniquarium, Chuzzle and Bookworm Adventures comes - get this - a game about plants. Tough plants. Plants so tough they can stop hoards of nasty zombies from terrorizing the neighborhood. Plants vs. Zombies is a quirky Tower Defense-style game of wits that might look like a cakewalk, but proves to be as challenging as it is fun.

      Virtual Families Review

      By Marc Saltzman

If you were a professional game reviewer, naturally you'd want to bestow high marks on a deep and ambitious game. But what would you do if that game wasn't finished? If it were laden with many technical and graphical issues that marred the experience? And what if it were an unoriginal concept?Such is the case with Virtual Families, the latest from developer Last Day of Work (of Virtual Villagers fame), and while we had fun with this The Sims-esque game, we also grew frustrated with its lack of polish and innovation.

      Sinking Island Review

      By Marc Saltzman

If you think it would be fun to be a billionaire, perhaps you ought to hear about poor old Walter Jones. In his case, it was murder. In the Agatha Christie-esque adventure game Sinking Island, you play as Jack Norm, a police detective called to a remote tropical island to investigate the not-so-accidental death of Walter Jones, a wheelchair-bound billionaire found dead at the bottom of a cliff. Who did it and what was their motive? This is what you must find out by interrogating the ten suspects, snapping photos and collecting evidence. While not one of the better adventure games available, this attractive point-and-click detective story might appeal to fans of murder mysteries.

      Mevo & the Grooveriders Review

      By Marc Saltzman

If Super Mario married a guitar god from Rock Band, their offspring might resemble something like Mevo & the Grooveriders, a quirky music game for the PC. This side-scrolling rhythm puzzler is both entertaining and challenging and what it lacks in the originality department it makes up for in sheer fun.Music is good and silence is bad - this is what you need to know going into Mevo & the Grooveriders, as our hapless alien critter must reunite his band, the Grooveriders, and bring funk back to save the universe. Players must control Mevo through five psychedelic worlds, by running, jumping, swimming and flying from the left side of the screen to the right.

      Annabel Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Now here's something you don't see every day - a 3D hidden-object game ("HOG") that lets players move around environments in order to find items. The concept works very well in Annabel, an Egyptian-themed adventure from Jet Dog Studios.

      Escape Rosecliff Island Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Played one "HOG" - or "hidden object game" - and you've played them all? That depends, as some game makers attempt to add a few twists to the popular casual game genre in order to keep things fresh and fun.SpinTop Games' just-launched Escape Rosecliff Island doesn't mess with the formula much - in fact, some may argue it has delivered virtually the same game as one of its predecessors (read on) - but still proves to be a fun object-hunting game with atmospheric graphics and enjoyable mini-games. If you don't mind a recycled experience, that is.After a nasty storm you find yourself shipwrecked on a remote island, and so you must visit various locations, solve puzzles and find items you need to help get you off.
