      Magic Encyclopedia: Moon Light Review

      By Marc Saltzman

One of my favorite trends in the casual gaming space is the fusion between hidden-object games ("HOGs") and adventure game-like puzzles, like Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst and Dream Chronicles: The Chosen Child. Last fall we also saw the debut of Alawar's first HOG, Magic Encyclopedia: First Story, an atmospheric hand-drawn puzzler that successfully merged these two game styles together -- despite some nagging technical bugs that marred its initial release.

      Artist Colony Review

      By Marc Saltzman

If you're like me, you glanced at I-play's new casual game Artist Colony and immediately wrote it off as a copycat of Virtual Villagers or The Sims. I mean, it features little virtual characters who interact with each other, fall in love, advance in their career and clean up messes they make. But oh, how I was wrong. After spending nearly a week with Artist Colony, the similarities to Virtual Villagers are merely cosmetic. This engrossing single-player game stands on its own merit and proves to be highly enjoying and gratifying twist on the simulation genre.

      iCarly: iDream in Toons Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Stop me if this sounds familiar: You fall asleep watching a cartoon marathon and find yourself in a dream where your friends have all turned into cartoons. This is precisely what Spencer Shay is going through while dozing in front of the boob tube. Before he wakes up, though, he needs to solve the mystery behind who transformed his buds Carly, Sam and Freddie into colorful cartoons, and why.If you're up for the challenge, consider downloading Nickelodeon's iCarly: iDream in Toons, a new hidden object game ("HOG") designed for kids and teens. While not a flawless adventure, this personality-driven puzzler delivers some fun.

      BurgerTime Deluxe Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Who could forget Burger Time, the tasty '80s arcade game that challenged players to build hamburgers and avoid running into the nasty toppings. Even fitness guru Jillian Michaels, star of The Biggest Loser, says she spent many a quarter on this frantic arcade puzzler back in the day.Well, it's back. Namco Networks has resurrected this classic but while adding new game-play elements, better graphics, bigger levels (both vertically and horizontally) and minigames, too. It's not perfect, but a delicious update nonetheless.

      DinerTown Detective Agency Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Oh, that Bernie the Bookworm. Don't be fooled by his meek appearance -- he has the goods to become a savvy sleuth. After reading an ad in a magazine, Bernie orders a detective kit and with the help of his friend Flo (of Diner Dash fame), he sets out to solve more than two dozen mysteries plaguing Diner Town. Such is the premise behind PlayFirst's DinerTown Detective Agency, a new hidden object game (HOG) with fun deduction elements and many mini-games. If my weekend with this game (and my three kids) is any indication, this downloadable puzzler is worthy if your time -- and mouse-clicking finger.

      CLUE Accusations and Alibis Review

      By Marc Saltzman

What happens when a board game and hidden object game collide? The answer, of course, is CLUE Accusations and Alibis, a new downloadable puzzler from RealGames based on the mystery classic from Hasbro. The game successfully combines elements from both game-play types - primarily, deduction and object-finding - to solve a few hundred cases. You know the premise: a Hollywood dinner party at a millionaire mogul's mansion turns deadly when the host is murdered. You must search the house for clues and find the person responsible for the ghastly murder. Who did it, with what weapon and in which room?

      Youda Marina Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Beachfront property? Check. Some cash in the bank? Yep. A desire to build up a successful marina? You bet. So long as you've met these requirements, you can create and maintain a thriving harbor in Youda Marina. This business sim with a time management element might take a while to wrap your head around but offers a deep and enjoyable game if you're up for the challenge. The overall goal of this marina simulation is to build a beautiful - and efficient - marina, but in order to get there you perform dozens of smaller goals such as docking motor boats, creating attractions to make for happy guests, and of course, raking in plenty of cash (which can then go towards newer facilities to keep everything running smoothly).

      Magic Ball 4 Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Fans of "brick breaking" arcade games popularized in the '80s - such as Arkanoid and Breakout - might get a nostalgic kick out of Alawar's new downloadable digital diversion. Magic Ball 4 is the latest in the publisher's two million unit-selling series - and while it's not too different than its predecessors, it proves to be a fun take on the classic formula.First, the story. Oh yes, there is, um, a story with this ball-breaking game. As luck would have it, aliens have entered our dimension and kidnapped thousands of humans. Your job is to return them all to our world by touching them with the Magic Ball of Relativity. If your aim is good, you can advance through the various levels and bring everyone (and everything) back home.
