The Conjurer: A Magical Mystery Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Some hidden object games, naturally, are better than others. And now we've got The Conjurer: A Magical Mystery, a very good but not flawless "HOG" from GameHouse. When it comes to production values, personality and story, this new game delivers the goods, but falls short in other areas.

      Save Our Spirit Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Looking for the Next Big Thing in hidden object games (HOGs)? Save Our Spirit isn't it. While this new casual game provides a lot of challenging game-play, it's also a frustrating experience due to tricky (and sometimes unfair) puzzles and other shortcomings. As a result, what could have been a highly-polished and deep HOG ends up as a mediocre experience that's not really worth your time or money.

      Zuma’s Revenge! Review

      By Marc Saltzman

When you're working on a sequel to a game that has sold more than 17 million copies worldwide, you must strike that perfect balance between not messing with the winning formula yet also adding enough new features to justify the purchase.  How did PopCap Games fare with the follow-up to 2003's Zuma?  Very well, but the savvy game makers erred on the side of caution by staying true to what made the original game an extraordinary success - rather than attempting to deliver something different. If you're a Zuma fan and want more of the same, this great-looking follow-up will provide many hours of ball-bursting fun, but those expecting something fresh might feel PopCap dropped that ball.

      Hide & Secret 3: Pharaoh’s Quest Review

      By Marc Saltzman

If you're getting a little burned out by the seemingly endless wave of hidden object games ("HOGs"), the third release in Anarchy Enterprises' Hide & Secret series won't do much to convince you otherwise. It's not a bad game, no, but certainly below the quality you've grown to expect from today's HOG offerings. In Hide & Secret 3: Pharaoh's Quest, you're tasked to reunite two ancient royal lovers -- the Pharaoh and Cleopatra, no less -- but in order to do that you must find all the scattered amulets across the globe, which have been stolen from the king and queen's tombs. While you'll start in Egypt, you'll eventually collect passports to visit locations in Italy, China, England, France, Mexico and Italy.

Tales of Monkey Island: Ch. 1 – Launch of the Screaming Narwhal Review

      By Marc Saltzman

You might not be old enough to remember the fun - and funny - pirate-themed Monkey Island computer games that debuted in the early '90s from LucasArts, but if you enjoy challenging puzzles, memorable characters and a treasure chest full of humor, be sure to download the first all-new adventure in many years. Telltale Games, in partnership with LucasArts, has just launched Tales of Monkey Island, distributed digitally in playable monthly "episodes" for Windows PCs (reviewed here) and via WiiWare for the Nintendo Wii console. The first in the 5-part series, Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is now available for download.

Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allan Poe Conspiracy Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Combining hidden object games with well-known literary works is a popular trend today - whether it's classic Agatha Christie yarns or more contemporary works, such as James Patterson novels - and now players get to click through Edgar Allan Poe's gothic 19th century tales.

Jewel Quest Mysteries 2: Trail of the Midnight Heart Review

      By Marc Saltzman

If there's one thing a casual gamer can say about the summer of 2009, it's that there is no shortage of hidden object games ("HOGs"). Over the past couple of weeks I've reviewed Diner Town Detective Agency, iCarly: iDream in Toons, Magic Encyclopedia: Moon Light  and Department 42 - The Mystery of the Nine. But as television infomercial guru Ron Popeil says: "But wait, there's more!"

Department 42: The Mystery of the Nine Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Let's get this out of the way -- shortly after booting up Department 42: The Mystery of the Nine, a new hidden-object game ("HOG") exclusive from Big Fish Games, I was prepared to give it a solid "A" for its challenging and polished game-play, interesting story, adventure game-like puzzles and outstanding production values. But while these things are true, slowly the flaws of this game began to appear, and as a result lost some -- but not all -- of its appeal.
