1001 Nights: The Adventures of Sinbad Review

      By Marc Saltzman

While not one of the better hidden-object games (HOGs) to debut in 2009, Alawar's 1001 Nights: The Adventures Of Sindbad is a decent adventure for younger players or those new to the HOG genre. Seasoned players, however, might find this digital download simply too easy. The fictitious story surrounds Sindbad the Sailor, his amazing adventures and how he met (and saved) his true love. Inspired by the adventures penned in 1001 Arabian Nights, this enjoyable tale includes many wild locations, monsters and supernatural foes. In the game, you must help Princess Chalida locate the seven gems of her royal crown in order to break an ancient curse that has trapped her in a wooden body.

Where’s Waldo?: The Fantastic Journey Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Well, it's about time. The hottest casual game genre on the planet pretty much owes its success to the Where's Waldo books that challenge kids to search for and find well-hidden objects in a busy scene. And now, years later, we have the first Where's Waldo "hidden-object game" (HOG) for PCs and iPhone -- Where's Waldo: The Fantastic Journey is based on the beloved book series by British illustrator Martin Handford. (Factoid: the first book was called Where's Wally?, in 1987). So does this new HOG live up to its influential namesake? Yes it does, though it's not a perfect adventure.

      Luxor Adventures Review

      By Marc Saltzman

What do you get when you cross the wildly popular hidden object game (HOG) genre with one of the most beloved ball-busting franchises in casual gaming history? The answer is Luxor Adventures, the latest from Mumbo Jumbo that does a great job fusing the two types of play together, as well as folding in a good story, a myriad of mini-games and high production values.

      Murder, She Wrote Review

      By Marc Saltzman

It seems like a match made in heaven: a hidden-object game ("HOG") that has you scouring for clues and solving puzzles to unravel a murder mystery, all based on the coveted Murder, She Wrote television series that ran from 1984 to 1996. Now available for the PC and Mac, Legacy Interactive's Murder, She Wrote does stay truthful to the long-running show - thanks to excellent writing, plot twists and good voice-acting (led by a convincing Angela Lansbury sound-a-like) - but the fun object-finding puzzles and mini-games also hold their own, even without the MSW association.

      Hidden Magic Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Two mages, Gabriel and Anna, live happily in a small house in the forest. One fateful day, however, when one of them stepped away from home, sinister goblins broke in and kidnapped the other mage. And so you must decide to play as Gabriel or Anna and work towards rescuing your loved one by searching for clues, solving puzzles and fighting evil.  Such is the premise behind Hidden Magic, an excellent hidden object game (HOG) with an engaging story, multiple gameplay elements and tons of replayability because of many modes, unlockable content and randomly-placed items in levels. Not everyone might like the combat mechanic, but it certainly takes the HOG genre in a new direction.

      By Marc Saltzman

Alabama Smith in the Quest of Fate Review

      By Marc Saltzman

Forget Hannah Montana, now we've got Alabama Smith, in his latest adventure: Aabama Smith in the Quest of Fate. OK, despite this time-traveling hero's cheesy name (what were the developers thinking?), this sequel -- which successfully fuses hidden-object game ("HOG") mechanics with point-and-click adventure gameplay elements -- does manage to deliver a memorable ride.
