    The first thing that made me like Bubble Epic was the eerie but amicable tree trunk that shoots out the projectiles in this new bubble popper. It reminded me of my younger days in gaming; specifically, the art style of 1990's Gargoyle's Quest, and I found myself expecting additional touches of "epicness" to an increasingly tired genre. Unfortunately, the feeling wore off quickly, and I was left playing a bubble shooter that felt like others in the genre despite some fine touches to its aesthetics and minor changes to its gameplay.

    You know your character's a tough cookie when he can take a few seconds to stop killing zombies (okay, "reapers") in order to build entire shops from the ground up. Even Chuck Norris could never match that. But that's everyday fare in Citizen Grim, a new top-down social action game from the same folks that brought us Mercenaries of War. You'll find none of the happy faces and cute visuals that usually define Facebook games here; true to its name, Citizen Grim is a gritty, bloody affair that's full of the guts and wanton slaughter that we in the 18-45 crowd apparently love.

    The best thing about steampunk is that it never seems to go out of style. You can take one of the most tired concepts imaginable, deck it out in some shiny steampunk gear, and suddenly it's appealing and fresh. That's the approach Kabam has taken with their new Arcane Empires strategy game, which plays like many other games in the genre (including Kabam's own Kingdoms of Camelot), but with a steampunk theme that should appeal to even the most jaded fans.

    It's hard not to admire the determination of the human race after playing Gameloft's Cosmic Colony. Just moments after crash landing onto a distant planet in the year 2088, they're already tossing up headquarters and scouting out the landscape for sites for potential mines. There's none of that nonsense of moping over the presumably wrecked spacecraft or even worrying too much about the inevitable injuries.

    You have to hand The Simpsons: Tapped Out one thing: it certainly doesn't hide its intentions. Almost every step of the tutorial pokes fun at the nickel-and-dime conventions of social city building, particularly in the form of the donuts that pass for premium currency, and much like Homer, it's rarely subtle. At one point, standing in one of the alternate Springfields (in other words, your friends' creations), Homer exclaims,"Wow, I'd spend money--real money--to have a town like this!" If it weren't so flagrant in its own attempts to nickel and dime you, it'd be worth appreciating EA's take on The Simpsons universe as satire of the highest order.

    In recent years, the social gaming scene has been crowded with tired Farmville clones that usually only let your friends gawk at your farm or village and fiddle with various distractions; Majesco wants you to challenge those same friends, let them have a good time, and give them a reason to visit your social spaces that doesn't merely involves snagging some extra energy and coins for your own creations. If that sounds like fun, I'm happy to report that it is, but you should also steel yourself when it tosses you a few balls that don't stay in the court.

    You don't have to spend much time with The Walking Dead Social Game to realize that there's a lot of potential shambling about this tie-in. It all starts but moments after creating your character while you crouch behind a motorcycle alongside a police officer to avoid the gaze of a passing zombie. As the "walker" lumbers forward and you hit a command to strike it, an "x" swings like a pendulum over its head, and if you time it right, your bat comes thwacks the life out of it. That little bit of action alone already sets The Walking Dead apart from many of its peers, and pushed a little further, there might be something almost revolutionary here. It's a pity, then, that developer RockYou make so many energy demands to perform the smallest action.

    Online strategy games seem to be enjoying the same surge of interest that casino titles were savoring just a couple of a months ago, and as was the case then, it sometimes gets hard to tell one apart from the other. You could be forgiven for thinking that Clash of Clans was a modded reskin of the recently released Galaxy Life: Pocket Adventures. While they differ in visual styles, both games center on building up a base in a persistent online environment and then defending it from other players. Feeling feisty? You can attack other players as well. The good news, though, is that there's enough to distinguish Clash of Clans as a game worth playing (despite some missteps).
