    With so many gem-based puzzle games coming out on what seems like a monthly basis, it's tempting to consider a name like "Gem Rush" as a metaphor for the current state of the genre on Facebook. Most, to be sure, are forgettable, and even the best of them sometimes feel like doppelgangers of Bejeweled Blitz. I'm pleased to say that this isn't really the case with Gem Rush. Far from being a mere rip-off, Gem Rush provides a slick, fast-paced experience that will suck you in for dozens of minutes at a time. The only is question is whether if offers enough to keep its players past the initial rush.

    I've faced off against watermelons on the iPhone. I've fought duels to the death with oranges and pineapples on the Xbox 360. They have all shuddered at the sight of my juice-dripping blade. And now, at last, I've followed the path of the Fruit Ninja against the seeded hordes on the plains of Facebook, and I have walked away content. Fruit Ninja Frenzy may not bring much new to the chopping block, but its combination of the best aspects of the standard game with the trappings of Bejeweled Blitz make this a title worth noticing.

    Playing slots is fun enough when you're on the floor of a big name casino in Las Vegas, but I laughed at the thought of enduring the same Facebook. After all, the "game" at its core is really no more than pulling a lever and hoping several icons load up for the chance of winning some cash, and on Facebook, even the cash wouldn't be real. Yet, against all odds, 3D Slots managed to hold my attention. Not only does it provide a wide variety of different slot options, but it also spices up the gameplay with minigames and entertaining animations.

    I had to force myself to quit playing Triple Town in order to write this review, which might give you some idea of just how addicting it is. It's almost scary. One minute I was logging in with the intention of taking a few screenshots and verifying a few notes, and the next I was grumbling that an hour had gone by and I hadn't written a word. Triple Town was already incredible when it made its first appearance on the Kindle almost exactly a year ago, but this new Facebook release manages to improve on what even then seemed like an almost perfect puzzle strategy game. Combining challenge, fun, and gameplay that can last for hours or minutes, Triple Town is everything a casual game should be.

    Mebas feels like it was designed by a well-meaning biology professor as an introduction to laboratory science, and I mean that in the best way possible. Sure, it fosters player-versus-player action by letting you build organisms that can attack those of your opponents. Sure, it includes the usual social standbys such as sending items to your friends. But nothing distinguishes this off-the-radar title so much as the thought-provoking pleasure of playing god on a microscopic level. It's a great idea in theory, but its inviting multiplayer mode suffers from an almost total absence of players.

    Let's admit it. Even after a couple of years' worth of innovations, the man on the street is still likely to think that gaming on Facebook consists of endless variations on FarmVille and showing off neatly planned digital creations to anyone else who happens to be playing. (That, and bugging your buddies for a flowerpot or some other trivial prop.) Bossa Studios' Monstermind seeks to smash those assumptions, and to smash all your friends' hard work with a rogue's gallery of monsters in the process. It's a stellar idea, and one that turns Facebook's worn-out tropes on their heads at a time when they need it most.

    Airport City makes me a little afraid of flying. It doesn't force me to place my life in the hands of a pilot that I'll never see, it doesn't lift me several thousand feet in the sky without anything to support me; no, Airport City frightens me because I worry that I'll have to fork out yet another Facebook credit every time my planes are ready to reach for the clouds. To be sure, the last few years have driven home the sad fact that financial loss is a staple of the airline business, but somehow I doubt this is what 6Waves wanted its players to think about when it designed this new social sim.

    If you've ever wondered where old game shows go when they die, iWin is making sure that Facebook might be a good place to start looking for them. After all, we've already seen the release of immortal favorites as Family Feud and The Price is Right with much success, and now iWin hopes to breathe new life into a forgotten favorite called the $100,000 Pyramid. If only the approach was different. Facebook seems like a good fit for the 70s hit, but iWin's excessive gameplay limitations mean that you'll feel like you're back in the disco days waiting for the next day's episode.
