    After already announcing a fifth entry in their critically acclaimed Dracula series earlier this summer, not to mention the long-awaited third installment in the iconic Syberia saga, developer Microids is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, with a brand new detective-themed point-and-click adventure that will have gamers cracking the dream-like case by the end of the month.Taking place in the bustling 1930s, Dream Chamber follows the adventures of a rich heir named Charlie, who becomes a self-appointed private detective of sorts after his girlfriend falls victim to a jewelry robbery at a lavish museum opening. And with that, Charlie throws on his raincoat and fedora and sets off to find the culprits in a wonderfully stylized and humorous take on the point-and-click adventure."But what really sets Charlie apart from all the other amateur detectives out there is the heir's uncanny ability to revisit the various crime scenes in his own dreams, where he is able to find additional clues that are firmly planted in his subconscious mind. This whole dream-detective setup is clearly reflected in the first screenshot we've seen of the game, which features a cartoonish looking Charlie snooping around a warped and dreamlike office, with a wavering black-and-white tiled floor.Promising to offer lots of great humor and challenging puzzles, Dream Chamber is currently slated for release on October 24, 2013, and will be available on PC, Mac, and iPad platforms.

    Jane Jensen, creator of the original Gabriel Knight series from way back in the early 90s, has a pretty exciting announcement this week for fans of the classic line of point-and-click adventure games: her development studio Pinkerton Road has officially acquired the Gabriel Knight licensing rights from Activision. And what do you think they've been doing with those newfound rights over the last year or so? Why, recreating the original Gabriel Knight adventure from scratch to commemorate the game's 20th anniversary!The Gabriel Knight saga follows the harrowing adventures of the titular bookstore owner and struggling novelist, as he makes his way through the voodoo-infested swamps and back alleys of New Orleans, and outwits the evil legion of shadow-hunters known as the Schattenjägers. Set for release at some point midway in 2014, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is being completely reinvented from the ground up under Jensen's acute oversight, with full retina display visuals and new voice acting performances for when the game launches on PC, Mac, iPad and Android."This will be Jensen's first Gabriel Knight-related project since the creator left Sierra Online in 1999, and she couldn't be more excited about getting to revisit one of her most beloved creations in this manner: "I'm thrilled to be back at work on Gabriel Knight and to bring this classic game to a new generation of players," Jensen says. "It's going to look and feel like a brand new title. But never fear, 100% of the original Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is here.     It's award season for the gaming world once again, and I don't even have my tux pressed yet! Today we learn all of the inspiring new winners from the latest IndieCade international festival of independent games, where the motto of "Play. Create. Inspire." goes hand in hand with the great sense of discovery that this gathering of both gamers and developers alike has always managed to achieve.  This year's big winner of the IndieCade Grand Jury Award, which is awarded outside of the regular game categories and chosen for an all-around achievement in excellence, went to Quadrilateral Cowboy from Blendo Games, an intriguing cyberpunk adventure about espionage and digital hacking. Past winners of this coveted award include Moon Stories, Fez, and Unmanned."This year's IndieCade awards also saw the premiere of two brand new award categories: The Media Choice Award, as chosen by the majority of media members themselves, and The Trailblazer Award, which is presented to an up-and-coming developer who manages to really bring something new and innovative to the world of video games.In speaking about the latest Red Carpet ceremony and the 14 total 2103 award recipients, IndieCade CEO Stephanie Barish says "It is an honor to identify these amazing projects and we are proud to provide a platform which helps distinguish these games and their creators."

    A far cry from their previous outing in the wonderfully bright and sunny adventure world of Lili, BitMonster Games has returned with a horrific zombie shooter called Gunner Z, whose blend of fast-paced gunplay and night vision imagery work wonders towards making you pray that such a world never comes into existence for everyone reading this article one day. But despite its unique and engrossing atmosphere, not to mention its exhilarating and pitch-perfect gameplay, there are too many other aspects of the game (particularly the shameless microtransactions) that will leave players feeling a bit too lifeless themselves afterwards.Now let's talk first about the good in Gunner Z: the graphics and the gameplay. The actual action in the game plays out predominately in a zombie-overrun city through a night vision lens. Everything in the world is embodied through black and gray hues, with your enemies lighting up in a glowing and ghastly white light. It's a wonderful idea, and polished to perfect in its actual execution: the dark atmosphere is both frightening and frantic, and it makes you feel claustrophobic in the best possible way."The touchscreen controls are an absolute breeze to pick up and get used to, with your right thumb panning the screen to reposition your crosshairs, and your left thumb tapping on the fire button in the opposite corner. You can simply hold down the fire button to spray a wide range of bullets at a clustered pack of zombies, although it's recommended to lift your thumb up and switch to singular tapping for more one-on-one encounters. You'll also have two different weapons to choose from with the simple tap of a button, which lets you mix things up with alternating machinegun and rocket artillery fire; this especially comes in handy once the game starts introducing bonus red enemy types and environmental hazards like roadblocks and landmines.

    I'll be honest: I kind of freaked out a little when I saw that Spud's Quest was a straight-up homage to Codemasters' iconic adventure game The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy. There was probably no other video game I played more when I was a kid, and it took my parents and I a solid three years to finally complete the fearless egg's adventure (back when there were no such things as save points or online walkthroughs). I saw the resemblance in Spud's Quest the second I booted up the game, but after actually playing it, I found that our little potato's big quest to help a prince-turned-frog is so much more than a simple homage to an adventure gaming great: it's a fantastically retro adventure that rightfully stands on its own as an essential crash course in inventory-based adventure gaming.Players familiar with the wildly fantastic worlds of Dizzy the egg (and in particular, The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy) will find that the majority of Spud's Quest plays out like a giant fine-tuned homage to one of gaming's greatest and oft-forgotten adventure heroes of old. Blatant echoes of Dizzy can be found at nearly every turn in the game: from the starting environments like the treehouse village and the rocky mines; to the familiar items you'll find and their overall uses; and even right down to the layout of the land itself, with the lake leading into the town to the left of the starting village. For compulsive Dizzy enthusiasts like myself, it provides a trip down nostalgia lane like very few other games I've ever played."But what's great about Spud's Quest is that for every reference the game gives to its Dizzy inspiration, it does three other things that are refreshingly new and unique to the adventure itself, and some of which I even wish we had seen way back in our prime Dizzy days. On a more basic level, you've got your much-needed save points, Zelda-like health upgrades, and a flurry of achievements and optional collectables to find. On the deeper end of the spectrum, you have engaging new environments like broken windmills and parked stagecoaches, and a slew of more complex features that accent the overall adventuring gameplay in a really wonderful way. Spud's Quest represents what The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy could have been like had the creators kept the series going well into the 2010s, and added in some timely new features.

    From Kumobius, creator of the fantastic Time Surfer and Bean's Quest, comes a mesmerizing new action game called Duet. Described as a "hex-like" game of sorts that achieves an elegant presentation through a sleek minimalist design, Duet tasks players with maneuvering two different colored orbs through an increasingly difficult maze of falling objects. The orbs are linked together in a small circular orbit, and players simply have to rotate the chain to the left or the right in order to dodge the blocky and rectangular obstacles that get in their way.Primarily a game about reflexes, and how fast you can get yours to react, just from watching the debut gameplay trailer of Duet in action, I can already tell that this one is going to join the ranks of games like Super Hexagon in providing an insanely challenging and "twitchy" experience: and I, for one, am totally all for that. With over 50 edge-of-your-seat stages, an endless Survival mode that you can use to brag to your friends, and a mystifying narrative that slowly begins to unfold, Duet is already shaping up to be a deep and engrossing mobile experience that is surely not to be missed.But the coolest thing we've seen about the game so far is that every time you make a mistake in Duet, the orbs will splatter red and blue paint on the pristine white obstacles: to serve as a constant reminder of where you went wrong. Duet is currently expected to launch on iOS devices sometime in Q4 2013.

    Charlie Brown and the gang are back once again to fill your mobile device with all kinds of heartwarming adventure and fun! Hot on the heels of the incredibly popular Snoopy's Street Fair city-building and simulation game, developer Beeline Interactive has announced another partnership with Peanuts Worldwide for a second mobile offering in the Peanuts universe called Snoopy's Candy Town.The premise of the game involves Snoopy, Woodstock, and all the other beloved Peanuts characters running a candy factory in order to help Charlie Brown raise enough funds to become the new Class President. Could Charlie Brown finally come out on top for once without having the proverbial football being pulled out from under him? Well that's going to be up to you, and how much delicious candy you can produce!"In the game, players will start their business endeavors completely from scratch, by building the fantastic candy factory from the ground up, and filling it with whirling machines, mouthwatering storerooms, and an assembly line of Woodstock-like employees who fit the role of Willy Wonka's Oompa Loompas. Snoopy's sister Belle also has some pretty big doggy shoes to fill in the game, as she assumes the role of a candy shop manager to help sell all those sweet and sticky products to the sweet-toothed customers.Snoopy's Candy Town will be available on smartphones and tablets at the beginning of November, and you can head on over to the game's official Facebook page to get an early taste of the first released screenshots of Charlie Brown and friends in action.
