    When Raptrrecently announced an additional round of funding for a total of $27 million, I was impressed and puzzled at the same time. On the one hand, $27 million is nothing to sneeze about. On the other hand, to only boast of 8 million users (that's not active, mind you) with all that funding, is good spin but is actually sad. What is Raptr working on to justify all this funding, aside for the fact that founder Dennis "Thrash" Fong sure could play a mean game of Quake back in the day? Part of the answer was revealed today. Raptr has re-launched its web site as a social news platform. A mash-up of Digg, Facebook, and Xfire for games, the new Raptr site is very well-designed.

    Apple lowers the boom on apps with offer walls

    When Apple de-emphasized the impact on downloads in its AppStore ranking algorithm this past week, they also reportedly decided to clamp down on incentivized download programs, such as Tapjoy, W3i, and Flurry. Based on numerous reports (see sources at the end of this article for more details), Apple is rejecting developers who submit apps with offers walls and incentivized offer programs, on the grounds that they are violating section 3.10 of the developer guidelines, which basically states that you can't "game" the system. For good or naught, these changes are creating ripple effects on multi-million dollar incentivized apps market, discovery, and the entire eco-system around developing freemium games for the iOS platform.

    When Chris DeWolfe left MySpace after it was acquired by News Corp., he signaled his intention to create a social games company by buying Mindjolt, a leading aggregator and distribution of online flash games on Facebook. Yesterday, he raised the ante by acquiring two more game companies: Hallpass Media, a free online games network, and SGN, social mobile games company. The question is: will he take it to the next level and buy MySpace next?

Kiip has partnered with big brand marketers like Sephora, popchips, Dr. Pepper and the like to offer you a voucher for free lipstick, bag of chips, a can of pop (you get the picture).

    Hidden object games have been the lifeblood of the PC and Mac casual games market for years but have been seemingly absent on Facebook. . . . until now. We just reviewed and gave Mystery Manor, a HOG on Facebook, 4 stars. And just moments ago, Playdom officially released Gardens of Time. I got a sneak peak of Gardens of Time at GDC and liked what I saw.
