    Animoca/Dream Cortex games vanish from the App Store

    Animoca might not be the household name that Zynga is when it comes to free-to-play games, but if you own an iPhone, there's a pretty good chance that you've played (and loved) some of their work. Pretty Pet Salon, Hospital Story, Car City - the list goes on and on. Anything you've ever seen published under the Dream Cortex brand? That's their work. In fact, they're one of the most prevalent freemium developers working in mobile today - which is why it was so puzzling to see all of their games disappear from the App Store seemingly overnight.

    Love them or hate them, it seems pretty certain that social games are here to stay. Over the last few years, we've seen more and more traditional gaming companies embrace the world of social gaming - though I don't think any of us expected to see this company make the jump. Cave - the developer behind crazy "bullet hell" shooters like Bug Princess and Deathsmiles, have just announced that they're going to focus less on their hardcore audience and more on a social one.

    While I may have played a part in helping Gamezebo countdown the best games of 2011, there's one game from last year that didn't make any of our lists, yet still remained near and dear to my heart: Cthulhu Saves the World. Originally appearing on Xbox Live's Indie Channel and then later on PC, the game was a throwback to the old days of 16-bit role-playing games, but with a twist. It starred H.P. Lovecraft's bringer of end times in a surprisingly heroic role.

    If I were to sit down and make a list of my all time favourite video games, Cave Story would rank pretty high on that list. An indie gem in the Metroidvania fashion, there really isn't a single thing about that game that I don't love. So when I heard that Studio Pixel, the one man team behind that cult classic, had just released a new iPhone game, I rushed to the App Store to grab a copy. Now that I've played it, I'll simply say this - don't expect to like Azarashi simply because you liked Cave Story.
