Jillian will play any game with cute characters or an isometric perspective, but her favorites are Fallout 3, Secret of Mana, and Harvest Moon. Her PC suffers from permanent cat-on-keyboard syndrome, which she blames for most deaths in Don’t Starve. She occasionally stops gaming long enough to eat waffles and rewatch Battlestar Galactica.

    The Star Trek film reboots have successfully brought classic The Original Series back into mainstream popularity.  Updated Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are again blockbuster sensations, worthy of their own licensed iOS game.  Star Trek Rivals, the result of that gamification, is an aesthetically polished card battler that draws on another classic, Final Fantasy VIII's Triple Triad.  Unfortunately, its issues overshadow its innovations, resulting in a game that could be great only if future updates give 'er all she's got.

    On my list of "most wanted, never gonna happen" games, a standalone, licensed version of Triple Triad is right at the top.  The brilliance of this card-battling mini-game from Squaresoft's 1999 Final Fantasy VIII is the one thing fans and non-fans can agree on when not trading blows over the Junction system.  While Square Enix refuses to take our money and create this instant bestseller, other developers are tweaking the idea of Triple Triad and attempting to cash in—sometimes literally, as is the case with Laboratz.

    We love to wax nostalgic on the Golden Age of adventure games, but even the staunchest fans will admit that patience often outweighed brainpower in the genre's heyday.  Recent entries in the point-and-click coterie have tended to favor the player's experience in place of his ability to click randomly until something happens.  The Realm is the next evolution of this trend, further emphasizing fun over frustration, engagement over exasperation.

    When Fez first launched on Xbox LIVE Arcade in April 2012, hope for a PC release was low.  Creator Phil Fish dubbed it a "console game" specifically, with an experience crafted by the way players ingest it.  While this caused some PC gamers to close the window on Fish and Fez permanently, those who have patiently awaited a change of mind have finally been rewarded with a Steam release.  Time may not heal the PC-spited's wounds, but giving into the joyful charm of Fez just might.

    Few developers are as synonymous with the point-and-click adventure genre as LucasArts, but Daedalic Entertainment is rapidly working their way to a similar stature.  With their Deponia trilogy set to reach its inevitably charming conclusion later this year alongside the release of new IP The Night of the Rabbit, one might think Daedalic has already met their "on track to be the next LucasArts" quota for 2013.  That means the upcoming Memoria is merely icing on the platypus-flavored cake.
