    In an App Store rife with cloning, "Minecraft-style" has essentially become its own subgenre. A quick Google search alone reveals an almost monthly article about the latest attempt by an enterprising studio to bottle the lightning Mojang captured with their "Lego in a Sandbox" phenomenon. It's no surprise, then, that I dove into Majic Jungle Software's The Blockheads with considerable skepticism. What is surprising, however, is how much fun I had.

    2013 may have only just begun, but in my living room, the science fiction future is already here. Lost in the moment, I speed down the impossibly twisty highway in my hovercraft racer, careening around corners with the finish line in my sights. For a fleeting, but all-important microsecond I lose focus, slamming unforgivingly into a tunnel wall.

    If you play games on a phone or tablet, you'd be hard pressed not to have heard of Adam Saltsman's Canabalt. The iconic endless runner was recently admitted to New York's Museum of Modern Art as a poster-child for bite-sized play. If Canabalt is a reflection of app gaming's origins, then it's arguable that Saltsman's latest project - Hundreds - is a snapshot of where it's at today.

Luckily, love and hate are also adorable amorphous blobs from a new iOS puzzler; they're considerably easier to master…and a whole lot more fun.

    When I was younger, a new Disney movie meant two dependable things -- a magical (if altogether too expensive) time at the theaters, and a surprisingly robust videogame. It was the company's Renaissance, and fairytale mega-hits like Aladdin and Lion King spawned clever, well-received playable titles that were often just as absorbing. But rebirth doesn't last forever.

    With Wreck-It Ralph for iOS and Android, Disney find themselves in a uniquely advantageous position. Unlike the plethora of big name tie-ins collecting dust on digital shelves, the source material here begs for adaptation. I mean, a movie that serves as a love letter to the arcade era? You think they'd be able to deliver one good game out of that. As it turns out, you'd be wrong. They deliver three.

    I can't wait for the inevitable day when we're able to transport ourselves into video games (that is an inevitability, right?). It's not because of the possibility to fly, or have superhuman strength; certainly not for the chance to shoot fireballs from my bare hands. Instead, I want to start a rehabilitation center for all the poor, naive characters who can't seem to stop walking themselves off of edges. Until that day comes, however, there's always Hairy Tales.

    When I was a kid, Nintendo had the uncanny ability to make me an evangelist for genres I otherwise couldn't stand. I didn't like racing games, but played a mean Yoshi in Mario Kart. Likewise, I wanted nothing to do with planes until I got my hands on Star Fox 64. And while the Big N' refuses to bring its content to phones and tablets, a trailer for Psyonix's space shooter Arc Squadron has me thinking the studio may just be able to fill the nostalgia-sized hole in my heart.
