    Unless you've spent the last couple months in a remote jungle, or given up Gamezebo for Lent (how could you!?), then you've almost certainly heard about Nimble Quest. Part cellphone classic Snake, part SNES RPG, it's the latest bite-sized concoction from the trio over at NimbleBit, and one of our most anticipated games of the year. Until recently, we'd been feeding that anticipation entirely with gameplay clips leaked by company co-founder Dave Marsh. Then we got our hands on the beta.

    When news spread that respected designer Ron "Lovable Curmudgeon" Gilbert had left his post at Double Fine to pursue unnamed passion projects and vague future opportunities, I'm not going to lie: I didn't believe him for a second. With The Cave having reaped rave reviews from all the most storied publications, it seemed more likely that Gilbert had taken the instant millions that come with positive press and run off to his own private Monkey Island. Upon further inspection of a recent post on his GrumpyGamer blog, however, it seems that there might actually be something to his claims of "toiling away." And to think, I assumed that was just code for "rolling around in piles of unmarked dollar bills."

    If you're reading this, and you haven't downloaded and played Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing, it means that you've lived a joyless life since it hit the App Store last night. If by some chance you're stumbling across this in the days, weeks, or - let's not think about it - months following the game's release, and still don't have it on your phone or tablet, you have a dangerously large fun vacuum you need to fill. And if… Okay, let's just put it this way: you have absolutely no excuse not to purchase and play copious amounts of this game. Unless you're reading this hundreds of years in the future on a supercomputer in a post-Earth colony. And even then, you're on thin ice.

    The crunch. Days after finishing Year Walk, it's the persistent, echoing crunch of snow that has stuck with me. It doesn't help that I live in perpetually blustery Ottawa, Ontario, where a boot print full of powder is never more than a couple steps outside your door during February. Now, however, I half expect the world to drop away between one stride and the next, the pedestrian-packed streets replaced with a harrowing wood filled with mystical creatures. A minute detail that has - much like the game it came from - wormed its way inside my brain and left a small, indelible mark. Like a footprint in the snow.

    I thought I could do it. It had been a while since I had fallen off the wagon. All the devices in my house were purged of Triple Town, and I hadn't been caught in public screaming about "ninja bears" for quite some time. So when Spry Fox released their newest game, Leap Day, in a browser beta, you have to believe me when I say that I genuinely thought I could just take a quick look…so you'll lend me the money for some extra crowns, right?

    Reflecting on it after having put it down, Dropple is not all that different from games I've rated quite highly. Games that - in the formative days of the iOS landscape - represented all the wonderful novelty of mobile as a platform. And yet here, at the beginning of 2013, that fact represents not only a welcomed strength, but telling weakness for this recent Apple Editor's Pick. It's a pleasant, energetic distraction, sure - but like the central water droplet under the pressure of extreme heat, the fun factor here quickly evaporates under the weight of prolonged exposure.

    Jell-O has been many things for me over the course of my life: comfort food when I'm sick, a dessert at parties and after dinner; even a staple to subsist on during university. Easily its most fun role, however, is its recent turn as gelatinous antagonist in developer Robot Invader's Rise of the Blobs. Fair warning, however: attempts to eat through the screen will prove unsuccessful.
