    GREE's upcoming Call to Arms isn't attempting to reinvent the wheel. It's simply aiming to be a higher-quality wheel that will be appreciated by a wider array of wheel enthusiasts, and roll better on whatever terrain it is placed. Time is the only way we'll know for sure if people want to invest in a new wheel, but GREE's efforts and little changes to the design are great steps in the right direction.The wheel I speak of, of course, is Supercell's Clash of Clans. Often imitated but never duplicated, Clash has been sitting pretty at the top of the mobile strategy world for some time. Other developers have made attempts to jump into this space, but even the ones with an Android presence (whereas Clash was only up until recently a long-time iOS-exclusive) fail to stand on their own. GREE has been taking notes on these efforts. They've been quietly working on Call to Arms."We recently had an opportunity to briefly speak with members of the Call to Arms development team and check out a bit of the gameplay. They weren't shy about their similarities to Clash of Clans, having even name dropped it a couple times during our discussion. During our first glance at the game, the similarities were unmistakably similar, as well.  Base construction, resource gathering, army building, and even battles don't really do much to separate this game from its inspiration. However, GREE has been putting effort into the details.

    Neither zombie games nor card battle games are strangers to mobile. The two genres have even managed to cross paths in the past. Now, mobile game company GREE International is working on Beyond the Dead, a free-to-play game that looks to take some elements of card battles, zombie games, and traditional social games, and combine them in one big post-apocalyptic wasteland.The first title coming out of GREE's new Vancouver studio, Beyond the Dead looks to offer something for everyone. Speaking with the developers, the early launch of the game is going to ship with an extensive array of single player modes, as well as a more toned-down approach at multiplayer battles. During our hands-on session, multiplayer was limited to a screen showing portraits of each player's team of five characters, and then showing which player won the battle. There wasn't much to look at as far as the battles were concerned, but we've been told the plan is to roll out more depth after release."Outside battle, Beyond the Dead will feature a combination of elements seen in other card and social games. The home base system is reminiscent of most traditional social games, allowing players to set up and arrange various buildings and structures. Most of the buildings will simply serve to power up the team and utilize farming mechanics. There's currently not much in the way for offensive structures, either.

    GREE's upcoming title Dragon Realms is visually fluid. Seriously, I could spend an hour just watching enemies marching around on the screen (and when I'm done writing, I may very well do that). The latest entry in GREE's RPG+ franchise looks to further blend simplicity and depth. Slick visuals, tons of single player content, and an emphasis on guild play drive the title forward as we near its launch.Guilds were one of the biggest points of emphasis when we spoke to GREE earlier this week. In many mobile and free-to-play games, guilds and alliances are just there. Developers seem to put them into the game because players expect to have the option to join a guild, even if nothing of value results from the opportunity. While guild-based quests and events are nothing out of the ordinary, GREE is making a few moves that add to the traditional guild functions."One of the neatest functions is the inclusion of guild bonuses. Guilds have a list of bonuses that can be purchased to better support the team and its members. When a member has enough gold, he or she can purchase a bonus. These bonuses range from increasing the maximum number of guild members to increasing the effectiveness of certain character skills. These power-ups and abilities aim to help players tackle events.

    Playing Puzzle Knights is much like buying a pack of cheap hot dogs. At first, you look at the packaging, notice how many hot dogs come to a pack, and you think, "This is a really good idea." As you take them home and start to make them, you slowly start to think that you may have made a mistake. By the time it's sitting in a bun, ready to be eaten, you realize that no amount of ketchup can save you now.Like cheap hot dogs, Puzzle Knights isn't necessarily a bad idea. Its gameplay is split into two portions: a match-three puzzle game and a rock-paper-scissors type of battle. For the most part, the match-three gameplay is standard fare. You'll swap the positions of two adjacent gems, making lines of three or more like-colored ones. Clearing four or more gems in one move will occasionally form a power gem, allowing you to clear large amounts of gems quickly. The only slight sense of uniqueness is the turn limit. Each puzzle has a set number of turns to score a set number of points which will influence the other phase of the game.When you're done with the puzzle, you'll enter the combat phase. Combat is the weaker point of Puzzle Knights, due to its lack of hands-on gameplay and a general feeling of pointlessness. When you complete the puzzle, you'll earn stamina. At the pre-fight screen, you'll use that stamina to plan your attack.  Each slot of stamina can be filled with one of three options: Attack, Defend, or Counterattack. You'll simply set the order you wish to perform each action and your knight will do that in battle.

    Spend five minutes browsing the App Store and you're more than likely to come up with numerous games that feel identical in almost every way, from core gameplay mechanics, to features, to visuals. For every Temple Run and Candy Crush Saga that dominate the markets, there are dozens of smaller releases that follow the same pattern, hoping to land just a fraction of the user base of those giant titles. Even that kind of—relatively small—impact is difficult to pull off. Mobage's recent release, Monster Match, is a wonderful example of a game that encounters these struggles.Nobody understood the game's early challenges as well as Roger Royce, the Monster Match product lead.  "For Monster Match's initial spark of inspiration, look no further than the childhood fascinations of a team that grew up playing the original release of Pokémon," Royce told us. "Monster Match is an attempt to prolong this imagination and rekindle the wonder [of a game like Pokémon] with new players." Royce credits games like Puzzle Quest, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, and Puzzle & Dragons as some of the gameplay's main sources of inspiration. As our review points out, there are numerous similarities to Puzzle & Dragons, proving that inspiration alone doesn't make a game stand out. Royce pointed out, "There's something about the puzzle genre that people almost always categorize as being a 'casual' experience. When we first started designing Monster Match we played lots of other puzzle games and discovered a trend that contradicted this notion of 'casual.'" Royce mentions strict timers as one of the first common elements the team wanted to remove. "If we were going to make a casual puzzle game, it was determined that the player should not be rushed into their gameplay decisions."
