    Ah, the platformer. It's been a mainstay of just about every console since the Nintendo way back in the 80's. They've made their presence known and planted their flag regardless of graphical prowess or sophistication of controllers. It's little surprise they made the jump to iOS devices, or in the case of MaXplosion, "exploded" onto the scene.

    There's a good chance you're going to hate Minotaur Rescue. It's hard, a bit confusing, and there's a ton of psychedelic effects and sounds going off at every turn. There are also minotaurs wearing rainbow shirts that you need to rescue with your spaceship. It's unapologetic, bizarre, and makes you feel like you're on an acid trip when you boot it up. Yup, there's a good chance you're going to hate this game... but we love it.

    One of my main reasons for wanting an iPad was the promise of playing digital versions of board games with an even better setup than my iPod touch. The idea of putting the iPad down on the table to really simulate the experience was too good to resist. So far I've been rewarded handsomely for my purchase with games like Small World and Carcassonne filling my time. Now I can add Wizard Hex, a game playable on both my iPad and iPod Touch, to that list!

    The longtime gamer in me feels like I know what to expect from certain genres of games. If I'm told something is a first person shooter, or strategy or puzzle game, I can usually get pretty darn close to the conventions the designers used when building their game. The same goes for match-3 games - I've played and loved enough to have some assumptions about what I'll find. Dreamsdwell Stories 2 - Undiscovered Islands actually threw a curveball my way that was more than welcome!

    Neo Defender 2 sells itself as an Asteroids style retro shooter, and it definitely carries some of those similarities. The game also introduces a few changes and incorporates some elements that seem to make the game sometimes less fun than that 30 year old original, and other times downright unplayable.

    I love a good puzzle game. There's something about searching for the solution that's right in front of your face, if only you could see it. There's a great feeling of satisfaction when you solve it, only to be presented with a new puzzle with a slightly harder answer. It's one of the most rewarding genres to play in all of gaming. Rush is a new PC game that looks to join the ranks of addictive and rewarding puzzle games, but do all the pieces fit?

    For many years now I've been a fan of the rhythm game. Long before Rock Band and Guitar Hero took the world by storm, it was a niche genre that usually involved finding small print run games or importing them from overseas. At this point I consider myself something of an expert in this particular field. So when I heard that the creator of Parappa the Rappa had released an iPhone rhythm game, I downloaded it as fast as I could.

    I was never a big believer in platforming games on the iPhone. The controls just always seem a little too loose and imprecise for all that jumping. I chalked it up to a limitation of the touch screen and just went back to playing Bejeweled. Then I played through Pizza Boy, and for the first time really saw platforming controls done well on a touch screen (I'm sure it's been done well before that, but that's the first I saw first-hand). Since then I've definitely been open to the idea and was able to approach Pixeline and the Jungle Treasure with an open mind.
