    I'm going to spend a good chunk of this review comparing Hot Springs Story to Game Dev Story, mostly because the games are pretty similar, and are both made by the same company. Sadly the main place these two games are different is in the fun department, and after playing a lot of Game Dev Story, I'm sad to report that Hot Springs Story just doesn't provide the same compelling experience.

    Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a viking ship... that sailed the seas and plundered ports, all in the same trip! Luckily you won't be getting marooned on a deserted isle in Viking Tales: Mystery of Black Rock since you'll be squarely at the helm controlling the ship the whole time. And by the time you're firing off the cannons, you'll know this isn't some standard three hour tour.

    Shadow Era is a new CCG (collectible card game) similar to genre stalwart Magic: The Gathering. I don't say this as a bad thing, quite the opposite really. It's instantly comfortable to those of us familiar with the game, but different enough to never feel like a copycat. In fact it's really quite different, and in very good ways. It's definitely inspired by games like Magic but make no mistake, Shadow Era is its own game - and quite a good one at that.

    At this point I should really stop being so surprised when a unique take on something we've already seen a million times before hits my iPhone. Maybe it's my console background bias where multimillion dollar projects tend to more often than not just play it safe. The iOS world is still relatively untamed, and there are great games being made by small teams of super creative people. Tiny Wings is one of those games.

    Viva! Mall is one of the latest in a long line of management games made so uber famous in games like Farmville. But instead of tending crops you tend stores, provide inventory, and log in at certain times to collect money and put out more product. You can also decorate and expand your mall, always in the pursuit of opening more stores to move more inventory to make more money. Rinse and repeat.

    As a child of the arcade scene, I have much more than a passing familiarity with the NBA Jam franchise. Heavily steeped in lore and nostalgia, one could say I loved playing that game 25 cents at a time. Suffice to say I'm not one to tolerate a game showing up on my iPhone that's NBA Jam in name only and little else. Luckily, EA has surpassed the high bar I personally set for this title, delivering the real deal experience to my handheld.

    Obviously the real world allure of poker is that it's gambling, and playing well means you could win real world cash. Video game poker takes away the game's biggest draw (since winning gives your digital cash), so if it's going to be compelling the game needs to replace that with something unique. Poker Night at the Inventory, for instance, did it with four witty characters and tons of funny dialogue. Poker with Bob does it with, well... Bob.

    In the television show The Bachelor, the most drama comes from the so called "rose ceremony" where we get to see who stays and who goes by who's left standing there roseless. If you lined up a selection of iOS games side by side and decided in a very public way which games would get a rose and stay in the competition, I wouldn't feel the least bit sorry about leaving The Bachelor: The Video Game empty handed.
