Brian Anthony Thornton's career as a writer and critic began at age 14 when he created a fanzine called The Super Nintendo War Journal for his schoolyard chums. Since those humble beginnings he has worked as a community manager for several gaming forums, has had short fiction published in literary magazines, and has even covered a convention or two.

    Have you ever wondered what Princess Zelda was going through while she desperately waited for Link to come to her rescue? Maybe you have, and maybe you haven't, but I'd like to believe that if handled properly, her story could make for an interesting twist on the classic tale of the hero's journey. Unfortunately, Hope: The Other Side of Adventure takes what could have made for a groundbreaking and empowering experience, and utterly destroys it by substituting community theater-level soliloquy and angst for compelling gameplay.

    TV Tropes defines Master Higgins Syndrome (named after the protagonist of the Adventure Island series)  as an in-game compulsion to consume or die. I define it as an overwhelming urge to play Alper Sarikaya's  addictive island themed runner, Manuganu. Of course, I wouldn't have died if I hadn't, but life's a bit nicer now that I have.

    At first glance Enemy Strike resembles one of the billions of first-person shooter games available on the market today, but once you get past the gloss and dig into the gameplay, you'll find that it actually has more in common with the arcade classic Time Crisis than it does with Halo. Well, except for the "classic" part.

    From the spectacular pratfalls of Lara Croft onward, a certain sect of gamers have harbored a twisted obsession with watching their player characters perish in sloppy clumps of ragdoll chaos. We never meant to miss that leap, of course, and we hurl curses into the wind at our momentary loss of progress, but we are entertained, at least slightly, by the outcome. The developers of Grudger took that theme and ran with it.
