    Although obviously inspired by the classic, 16-bit JRPGs of decades past, Crystal Kingdom will be a brand-new and completely unique game. It's also an ambitious project, despite being developed by fans, with top-notch art, online multiplayer action and a list of potential features that would make most veteran developers blush. Even so, a number of gameplay demonstration videos floating around on YouTube make it look very much like the real deal.

    7 Grand Steps is not your usual videogame. Inspired by old amusements in the Musee Mecanique, it's an unusual blend of strategy and board gaming, with a wee bit of an educational bent, that takes place on a slowly rotating virtual game board representing the inexorable passage of time. Players begin the game as a lowly peasant struggling to survive in a harsh environment, but by making a family, learning skills and passing them on to succeeding generations, they can lead their descendants to a better life, perhaps even as a great king of the ages.

    This will probably come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the collectible card battle game genre, but Transformers Legends brings almost nothing new to the table and is for all intents and purposes just a re-skinned version of Marvel: War of Heroes. But Marvel: War of Heroes is a very good game, so you can hardly blame Mobage for not wanting to reinvent the wheel.

    I was originally attracted to A Walk in the Dark by both the visual style and the promise of a unique, engaging, and story-driven platformer. Alas, things changed, and due to toolset limitations and a development budget of approximately zero, the story elements were almost entirely excised from the game. The basic premise is still in place but it unfolds through just a handful of very brief animations, and if you aren't already aware of the story through the Walk in the Dark website or other external sources, you'll likely have no clue about what's going on.

    Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller follows the adventures of FBI agent Erica Reed, who possesses supernatural powers that allow her to witness past events, pull "memories" out of inanimate objects and even bring out long-forgotten memories in the minds of others. It's an intriguing idea but it's also a mess, brought low by clunky technology and writing and game mechanics that are completely out of place in such a dark, serious game.
