    A funny thing happened about halfway through the second installation of Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller: it stopped being terrible.  I actually almost started to think that I could possibly end up maybe kind of enjoying it. It was still clunky, overwrought and flat-out silly, but somewhere off in the distance I saw a glimmer of something I honestly did not expect: hope.

    Anyone familiar with the collectible card battle game genre will feel right at home with Pantheon the Legends. You'll complete "quests" to collect virtual cards representing gods, heroes, and other mythological figures from ancient Greece, enhance and ascend them, assemble treasures and, of course, battle your fellow players for fame, fortune, and bragging rights. In most ways it's very much like other games in the CCG milieu, but it also adds a few new ideas to the mix and that makes it worth a second look.

He's a cubical, brown creature with stumpy arms and legs, beady black eyes, and a gaping red mouth, filled with pointed teeth, that never closes. Objectively, he looks like something out of a nightmare, but in actuality he's friendly, cuddly and, if you catch him in the right light, even kind of cute.

    Gamebooks, for those unfamiliar with the term, are very similar to the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books of days long ago, with the added bonus of multimedia content like music, hi-res images, and even occasional bits of simple gameplay. At first glance, Askaryl's Grimoire looks like it will be an impressive addition to the genre, with an epic story of dark magic, betrayal, and war wrapped in glorious visuals and remarkably good music and sound effects. But looks, as we all know, can be deceiving.
