    Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time writing a review when I should really just be pointing at a game and demanding that people play it. This is one of those times. Steve Jackson's Sorcery! is an absolutely marvelous fantasy storybook adventure. Lushly illustrated and expertly told, it should not be missed by anyone even remotely interested in the genre.

    The ninjas of Ninja Village aren't exactly what you'd expect of deadly assassins. In keeping with Kairosoft tradition, they're tiny, pixellated and actually kind of cute, and they spend most of their time bringing in crops, cutting wood and hanging out at the local tea house. They don't dress in black pajamas and hoods, although you can buy and equip them with hoods if you like, and they won't be scaling castle walls or disappearing in clouds of magical smoke. Mostly, they're just people living their lives in a small village.

    No sense beating around the bush about it: Epic Pirates Story, the first game from indie studio Epic Devs LLC, borrows heavily from the popular Kairosoft model, with colorful pixel art graphics, cute, chatty characters and simplified combat and city management mechanics. In fact, the game's description on Google Play specifically mentions that it will remind you of Kairosoft's work and if you're familiar with that particular oeuvre, it will.

    In 1993, Peter Molyneux's Bullfrog Productions unleashed Syndicate, an isometric, hyper-violent proto-RTS set in a dystopian future controlled by globe-spanning corporations to whom the idea of "competition" meant everything from industrial espionage to all-out warfare. It was fantastic stuff and today remains a nostalgic favorite among gamers of a certain age, and that subset of gamers in particular would be well advised to take a look at Black Annex, an upcoming action-strategy game in which they'll get elbow-deep in the dirty business of business.

    I've played a lot of CCG battle games, so you can trust me when I say that most are the same old, same old - collect virtual cards, upgrade them and then "battle" other players by comparing yours to theirs to see who has the bigger number. It's a genre that has lizard-brain appeal to the obsessive-compulsive collector gene in all of us, but as far as actual gameplay goes it tends to be less than impressive. Tekken Card Tournament takes the opposite approach: The collecting part isn't great, but there's some real gaming to be found inside and it's not too bad at all.
