    In retrospect, it's a bit odd that while so many other successful social genres transitioned successfully to mobile smartphone platforms, the venerable old mafia RPG never quite did. Instead, mobile freemium leapfrogged right to the second wave of major social games, the cute management sims where you raise pets, design towns, or take care of any number of other things. In light of that, it's a bit odd that Red Robot's Life is Crime exists at all, since at heart it's an extremely traditional mafia RPG of the sort that would be right at home on Facebook in 2008.

    If you've ever visited a sufficiently large shopping mall, you've probably seen the little novelty carts that sell personalized books to someone's unfortunate child, grandchild, niece, and/or nephew. These personalized books are typically very standardized fare that an adult with very bad taste in presents can fill out, Mad Libs-style, with the name, perhaps a photo, and some other pertinent information about a kid who is about to get a really boring gift. You can also sometimes see licensed versions of these, featuring superhero and cartoon characters, which are intended to be filled out by a kid who's vain enough to want to see his or her name in print alongside artwork of characters from their favorite licensed intellectual property. I bring these up because Pixaquarium Game Maker is the social game equivalent of one of those little carts that sells "customizable" books.

    It feels a bit inopportune for Ludia to issue its Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? social game shortly after the cancellation of the original syndicated show. Fans of the game show, which at its peak was enormously popular, may find the social game lets them enjoy the show's presence a bit longer… or that they've found a fairly generic real-time trivia game masquerading beneath a game show license. Ludia's Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? appears to run on the same basic engine as its prior Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? game and playing it feels much the same.

    As the Internet reckons time, 2008 was an exceedingly long time ago. On Facebook, it was an eternity. Still, one of the most popular social games of 2008 was Parking Wars, a promotional title launched as viral advertising for the A&E reality TV series of the same name. Parking Wars was an exceptionally simple game in which the player tries to park cars for a certain period of time on a friend's street without being ticketed. It was a game that encouraged office workers who logged into Facebook to relieve boredom to check back several times per day, both to move their cars and to ticket their friends.Parking Wars 2 is essentially the same game after a much-needed dose of modernization.

    After FarmVille hit it big, dozens of imitators rushed to make mobile versions that would let farm sim enthusiasts play on the go. Many of these games were functionally FarmVille clones, but Critter Farm manages to be something very different. In Critter Farm, the emphasis isn't just on farming, but on protecting your farm from animals that want to eat your crops. By catching critters you add them to your collection, and get chances to send them to a friend's farm to help them complete their collection. What types of crops you grow determine which critters attack, so you have incentive to try growing lots of different things.

    It's always interesting when Wooga decides to create its own take on some dominant Facebook genre, because the resulting game inevitably fails to feel like a clone. Wooga's not good at making boring games and tries to liven up whatever formula it tackles with fresh ideas. In the case of Magic Land, you have a game that probably began life as a simple FrontierVille clone before picking up elements of CityVille, Digital Chocolate's various city-building games, and classic single-player RPGs.
