Cow Clicker is certainly no farm sim and isn't interested in capturing the attention of virtual farmers. Cow Clicker is famed games industry critic's Ian Bogost's reaction to the rise of social games, in the form of a social game he constructed by himself in a few days.

    A lot of social game genres begin with a game that takes an old formula and changes it up a little, with a new motif or a few twists to the rules. Market Street is a department store sim that, at heart, is following the formula of fashion games like Mall World and Retail Therapy. You can even sell clothing if you want. What's different about Market Street is that it's a much more masculine game.

    It's hard to put Playdom's Fanglies into any of the typical social game pigeonholes. Is it a virtual pet game, a city-builder, maybe a virtual world? Fanglies is hard to classify because it's something new to Facebook (if not strictly something new), a game based on Nintendo's complex town-building life-simulation series Animal Crossing. It may also remind you of EA's MySims franchise, which was also based largely on Animal Crossing.

    A common criticism leveled at social games is that they are not, in fact, very social. After all, few Zynga games let you interact with other players aside from sending gifts or using them to power up yourself. Fun Park is one of the rare games to actually be social, practically demanding that you play it with, ideally, at least six friends. The game is so reliant on having friends that it provides you with three CPU "default" friends, because without any friends it is literally impossible to make any progress in the game. Fun Park gives you chat and in-game mail systems so you can make the experience even more social, but at the cost of making it completely uninteresting for a solo player.

    Verdonia looks suspicious different from most of the games that Playdom publishes. It looks suspiciously different from most of the other major games on the Facebook platform, with perhaps the exception of Kingdoms of Camelot. Verdonia is a deep, complicated grand strategy game that demands real patience from a player. The graphics hearken back to turn-of-the-century PC games, with quasi-realistic little sprites representing your town and the fields surrounding it.

    Zynga has been quietly closing a lot of games of Mafia Wars's vintage lately, with both Street Racing and Roller Coaster Kingdom gone in the span of the past few months. Mafia Wars might have become a relic of an earlier era in social gaming in the hands of a lesser developer, but Zynga has steadfastly refused to abandon Mafia Wars and its 24.1 million active users, 8.7 million of whom are playing every day. Instead, Mafia Wars has seen a series of updates and upgrades roll out in the past year that try to bring this old text RPG into the era of more interactive, graphically rich games like FarmVille. Mafia Wars: Las Vegas is possibly Zynga's greatest success to date.

    Amusement park sims haven't had an easy time of it lately, given Zynga's closure of Roller Coaster Kingdom and the decline of a lot of other games in the genre. It would be nice if Social Point's Social Park was trying to breathe new life into the genre, but if anything it seems to serve as a reminder of why these sorts of games don't really last.

    Last Day of Work and 3 Blokes Studios have just released a new Facebook version of their long-running Virtual Villagers casual strategy games. Derivative franchises like My Tribe have already gotten their games launched on Facebook, but Virtual Villagers may prove to be worth the wait. It plays very differently than most prior attempts at casual strategy on Facebook, working in a Zynga-style energy meter that gives structure to the gameplay.
