    Puzzle Saga is a concept that seems inescapably bound by success: a Facebook game that merges match-3 gameplay with RPG fantasy battles in the vein of the multiplatform casual hit Puzzle Quest. While Puzzle Saga is quite good by Facebook standards, it's no Puzzle Quest. The puzzle battles are real-time instead of turn-based and there's no real level of customization. The emphasis is on making matches as quickly as possible rather than necessarily making the best matches.

    CityVille is Zynga's long-awaited entry in the city-building genre, which has proven itself amazingly durable on Facebook. Where many city-builders must be played strictly in brief bursts, CityVille actually offers enough to do that you can spend a considerably longer amount of time with it per session. In theory you can only do things until you run out of energy, but I found myself needing to wait for things to happen more often than I found myself waiting for my energy to regenerate.

    Wheelers and Dealers is the rare Facebook game that offers a lot more depth and engagement than you might expect. At first blush this is a game that looks very much like another text RPG trying to liven up the same old menu-clicking gameplay with lots of artwork. While there is a lot of menu-clicking in Wheelers and Dealers' gameplay, it's vastly more interesting than your average Facebook text RPG.

    Destiny Stone is one of the most extraordinary games on Facebook. It completely eschews Facebook's love affair with timer-based management sims to offer players a 2D side-scrolling platformer with combat, RPG stat progression, an equipment system, and an item crafting system as deep as anything you'd find in a console game. There's even a story-based plotline to follow with characters you can recruit and optional little dialog sequences to unlock. Where most Facebook games expect you to pay for the right to play it for hours on end, Destiny Stone is content to let you play as much as you like.

While you can purchase clothes for your princess in Princess Academy, there's not a lot of variety to buy and the clothes you purchase have no real in-game effect. The meat of the gameplay is old-fashioned text RPG stat-grinding. You have your princess work jobs (including strange stuff like wood-cutting and guest lecturing) so she can build up her stats and earn gold. You spend the gold on classes in subjects like martial arts and science that build up her stats.

    Toy Factory is from Fuel Games, a company that might be a first-time Facebook game publisher but is reputed to be the developer of PlayFirst's excellent Chocolatier: Sweet Society. Toy Factory certainly plays a lot like Chocolatier, using a similar basic gameplay style where you manufacture goods in a factory and then sell those goods in a customized, personality store. Toy Factory has you making classic, retro-style toys and uses a retro 50s aesthetic for the entire user interface. Moreso than most Facebook games, Toy Factory is a game that looks very appealing on even the most mundane levels.
