Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ is a free-to-play RPG from Square Enix. It’s sort of like “Kingdom Hearts Lite,” which is probably what most people would have expected. Gamezebo’s Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ tips, cheats and strategies will have you kicking Heartless backside all over the multiverse in no time.

Equipment and Avatar Gear

  • Mind your medals. You’ll earn medals as you play, and you can also purchase some from the Shop using jewels. Medals are super-important, because they’re the entire basis of your attack and defense. So, you know, don’t just slap a few into your keyblade and call it a day.
  • If you find a medal you really like, level it up! You can spend medals you don’t want (plus some additional Munny) to boost the level of your other medals – thus increasing their attack and defense power. I don’t want to sound like an alarmist but this is kind of essential.
  • Not all medals are for fighting. There are a few other medal types that you won’t be able to equip, but they’re still very important. Huey, Dewey, and Louie are best used to level-up other medals, Moogles are meant to be sold for extra Munny, and magic users such as Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother or Fantasia Mickey are required for evolution.

  • Elements matter. Each of the three elements (Power, Speed, and Magic) is weak to – and strong against – another. It’s basically Rock, Paper, Scissors, with the “right” element doing extra damage and the “wrong” one doing less. You can still get the job done when using a weaker element against a given enemy, but it’ll definitely take longer.
  • Each Keyblade is slightly different. Aside from looks, each Keyblade you acquire (as you complete more and more quests) will boost the power of certain medal types. As you upgrade the Keyblades you’ll not only increase the size of this boost, you’ll also start to unlock more slots for medals and more power boosts. So definitely upgrade your Keyblades when you can.

  • Medal order can be important. Certain medal abilities will give you a temporary boost instead of dealing damage, for example. So, if you’re using a medal that can do something like buff your attacks, consider putting it in the top spot. That way you can activate it at the beginning of combat and benefit from its effects before enemies even have a chance to attack.
  • Check out the Avatar Board every so often. You can change the look of your avatar pretty much whenever you want, but you’ll need to spend Avatar Coins in order to unlock new stuff. Fortunately the process of unlocking more gear will actually grant you permanent character improvements such as extra health or a larger AP (i.e. stamina) bar.
  • Wear whatever you want. You don’t have to equip the avatar items you’ve enhanced in order to get their benefits – once you spend Avatar Coins to unlock something like more health, it’s permanent no matter what you decide to put on your character.

Questing

  • Pay attention to your objectives before starting a quest. These three tasks aren’t essential to completing it (all you really have to do is eliminate your target), but they’ll earn you some pretty worthwhile goodies.
  • Also look out for your target’s element. With a few exceptions, your target is going to be the most durable enemy you face in a given quest. So if you want to make sure you can take it down, try to equip at least one or two medals of the element it’s weak against. You can refer to the ever-present element triangle if you’re having trouble remembering what beats what.
  • Don’t rush to complete a quest. I mean, you can, but there are usually lots of items and treasure chests sprinkled throughout each area. Many of those items are important for upgrading Keyblades, too.

  • Explore. Later levels get more and more spider webby, with all sorts of offshoots and hidden paths, but even the early stages have some goodies you can find if you look around a bit. So keep an eye out for the telltale sparkle of items – sometimes it may even help you find a secret or two.
  • If you keep your distance, enemies won’t attack. You can use this to your advantage as you explore the level, or even skirt around your target in order to nab an item or two.

Beating up the Heartless

  • Medals appear in the order they’re equipped. No matter what, your first attack will always use the medal you have set to the top slot in your Keyblade then continue around in a clockwise order.
  • Unless a Heartless gets the drop on you, you’ll always attack first. Heartless also won’t be able to attack you until you’ve used all of your medals (plus one for the “friend” you bring along). If you’re strong enough or plan well enough, you’ll be able to take them out before they can land a hit.

  • More medals means more turns. Keyblades start with three available slots for medals, but as you upgrade them you’ll eventually unlock a fourth and fifth slot. Since the Heartless can’t attack until you’ve used all your medals, this means you’ll be able to get more and more hits in as you upgrade your Keyblades.
  • The basics are very simple: tap a Heartless to attack it (utilizing the power and element of the selected medal), or swipe the screen to spread your attack out over every Heartless in a group.

  • You can spend energy that you’ve stored up (displayed in the top-left corner of the screen) from fighting in order to trigger a medal’s special ability. Tap and hold a medal to see what it’s ability is, or drag the medal towards the center of the screen to activate it. Be mindful of how much energy it takes and how much you have remaining, though.
  • Be sparing with those abilities. A given Keyblade’s ability to store energy can improve as you upgrade it, but you’ll still want to ration out its use. The last thing you want is to reach your target with no juice left in the tank.
