Terraria’s fantastic ongoing support is coming to an end
With its Minecraft-esque concept and its two-dimensional gameplay, Terraria became something of a hit when it was released last spring (netting an almost perfect score right here on Gamezebo). After the better part of a year in impressive sales, awards, fan support, and critical acclaim, developer Andrew “Redigit” Spinks has decided to end the developer’s near-constant support for the game.
Spinks made the announcement via a post on the official Terraria forums earlier this week:
After a lot of internal debate, we have decided that it is time to move on. My wife and I are due to have another boy soon, and I want to spend some time getting to know him. I also want to spend the time recharging and bettering myself as both a programmer and game designer. I have learned a lot from working on Terraria and plan on using what I’ve learned, building upon it, and moving forward with another, even better project. However, we are still planning at least one more bug fix for Terraria.
While the future of Terraria — outside of that one bug fix — is uncertain, the development cycle of the game is not necessarily complete. The official Twitter account of Gaslamp Games, developers of Dungeons of Dredmor, reached out to Spinks and Re-Logic. Gaslamp Games has offered to take over Terraria development, provided both parties are able to come to terms of an agreement. There’s no word yet on whether or not any talks have occurred beyond this initial tweet, but if you’re a fan of the game, now would be a great time to cross your fingers.
